Nope that was wrong too! It's "1978 Ford cortina mk4" got there in the end. Just went and had a look at the heater box and see what you've done. Should be simple enough, I hope! I hope you don't mind all these questions and some more might come your way during the build. Cheers

bellhousing on your type 9 will bolt up to the engine just fine. seen you readers ride thread, car looks good, will be spot on with 200bhp.

Right I’m starting to get all the bits together. Reading through your build thread, popuptoaster, I noticed you said you had an issue with the swirl pot and fuel pump in the boot? Please can you elaborate on this as I need to put mine somewhere and that’s the only place I can think of. I look forward to hearing back from you.
George.

Also, how did you set it all up? Sorry to be a pain but never had to add a swirl tank before. I presume I would need to connect the engine bound pipe to the pump, then to the swirl tank, then to another pump and then engine? Your help and guidance always appreciated. I’m really hoping to get this done in time for classic ford. Bit of a race against time!

just for a bit of peace of mind. I had a type 9 in my sierra estate with a 24v. It took a LOT of abuse. It was the later one out of the 4i i read they are stronger due to different bearings on the layshaft or something but that took skidding, burnouts, launching at pod HARD etc.

You want a low pressure pump from the tank to the swirl pot to fill it up, plus a return line from the swirl pot back to the tank, then a high pressure pump to pump the fuel to the engine from the swirl pot, return line from the engine can go to back to your fuel tank. either way you have to mod the tank to accept extra fittings, if I was doing it again i'd just modify the tank with an internal swirl pot, it saves on running the extra pump and pipework. you can run without a swirl pot if your tight for time, but you'll need to keep the tank half full all the time

I had an internal swirl pot fitted to mine by a chap in essex called Steve Taylor (performance conversions) then fitted the sierra pump in a sierra cradle under the spare wheel hole.

One of the reasons I suspect people have problems with the type 9 to the 24v is by not using the right box in the first place... the 5 speed type 9's that you want are off 2.8 engines in late mk2 granadas & capris + sierra XR4i.
The input shaft has caged roller bearings (like a T5 box) as opposed to the needle bearings you find in other type 9's - you can tell the difference quite easily if you compare the two boxes side by side... The 2.3 and earlier 2.8 5 speed type 9 boxes have the needle bearings and are no stronger than a pinto type 9, consequently they break more easily on a 24v engine.
Also, re. bellhousings - I would imagine the best one to have from a performance point of view is from a type 9 2.8 XR4x4 as it's alloy, and therefore a lot lighter - pretty rare though & not a lot of people seem to know about them!

the strong 2.8 boxes are pretty rare these days, if you want light though fit the MT75, its stronger and lighter and still relatively cheap so worth the faffing about getting one in from europe, 24v is a heavy beast though so the poiunt is moot really, my Cortina felt like i was driving a hammer.

Efi is hard to find for the 2.8, most had Mfi, and yes they do drink a LOT less fuel than carbed ones, if your changing engines anyway though i'd go for a 2.9, much easier to find the bits for, basically just buy a 2.9 granny scorpio (not bug eye shape) and rob it of all the bits you need including the engine, you can bolt your 2.8 gearbox, flywheel and clutch straight onto it and it'll sit on the 2.8 mounts. Hi why not the bug eye shape granny scorpio? i have a 120k 1995 2.9 auto efi v6 i was going to convert to manual and back to carbs for an up coming hot rod build, is this a bad choice? it was very cheap! old post i know but worried i bought the wrong car now! cheers
