Been a collector/owner of Classic Schwinn Stingrays for a while now........Classic NOT the 1998 onwards repro Stingrays OR the new chopper style mess. Classic, ie 1960's 1970's 'Rays. The original inspiration off the Raleigh Chopper.
Some of my collection below...............1968 Stingray 'Apple Krate', 1st year of the 'Apple Krate', came without a front mudguard as standard. As far as I am aware this is the only '68 Apple Krate in the UK. This bike is in original condition.Late model 1979 Schwinn Fairlady. Aimed at 14 to 16 year old girls to give them a slice of the musclebike market. The Stingray design was used for 3 girls bikes. The Slik Chik, Fairlady and Stardust. This bike is in original condition.1974 Schwinn Stingray 'Fastback'. Slight change in design for the older lads. This one is almost ready to be restored, I'm just trying to track down a couple of NOS parts for it. Another late model, a 1978 3 Speed coaster Stingray. This has a Sturmey Archer 3 speed thumb shifter as opposed to the crossbar monted shifter. This bike is going to be restored very soon as I now have all the parts required including a large number of original Schwinn accessories. This basket case looks alot worse than it is! This will be restored in the future once all the required NOS parts are sourced. It is a 1971 5 speed Stingray. Not a Schwinn Stingray but a 1971 Swingbike. These where made for 2 years only in Ogden, Utah before being banned as dangerous. These bikes are designed to have a swinging rear end so in effect you can ride sideways! This bike is totally original and is one of only a very few that was officially imported and sold in the UK. A very cool and rare bike!
More pics to follow of m other Stingrays!
If anyone else has original Stingrays (NOT choppers, repro's, beach cruisers etc) I'd love to see pictures!!
Cheers

Bananasplit - Very cool, have you ever been to Chopper meets at Billing, could swear I've seen the Trikes before. Chopper Express looks like a giggle! How the hell do you ride the Swing without the springs fitted? That must be tricky! I was big into the Chopper scene when the original Chopper Club was in existence, back in early/mid '90's. I sold them all (about 9 at one stage) when the scene became really anal and money orientated. 'My 10 speed HBR cost more to restore than yours, My MK1 is earlier than yours so worth more etc etc blah blah!' Thats when I started to buy the Stingrays from the USA, because they where different abd V Cool! Sold my last Raleigh last year, a mint original condition Tomahawk Formula 3 in Copper.

Jonny69 - Easy once you get used to it!! Gets some right looks as you cruise down the street sideways!
Down&Out - Over here pretty much all original Stingrays are hard to find, I bought most of mine in the USA. I still get all my parts shipped over from there hence why the long wait before resto because I have to save for the bits!
You have to want a Stingray to own, no money can be made on them in the UK as they are not as well known as the Chopper. Example.......The Apple Krate is worth about £1500 - £1650 in that condition in the US, over here in the UK no-one would pay half that price for one!

Very nice. original Schwinns a re pretty rare over this side of the world (not officially imported until recently) but I have owned a couple - A late 70's spitfire which was hand's down the worst bike to ride that I've owned (too heavy, poor proportions), and a Collegiate, which I have just sold, wonderful original condition but no wheels

So cool seeing those again! The closest I ever came was a Raleigh Tomahawk as my first proper the bike, the younger brother of the chopper!

dazza - Yeah repro's do seem to be popping here and there, personally not a big fan of the repro's. A bit like the Mk3 Chopper, just a company cash in idea on retro gear. They have no gears and cool shifters for a start! Great idea to use as a basis for a project like your doing - BMX, lowrider etc.
devilishdesigner - Thats why I like them, you gotta really be into them to actually get one, usually it's a battle to find or import one! I had a 1970's 24" Typhoon for a while that was all original and quite cool.
speedmerchant - I've recently sold a Raleigh Tomahawk Formula 3, never got used as it was in near mint original condition and I wouldn't let the kids use it!
I'm looking for a 1980's Falcon Pro Zeta if anyone can help!? That was the 1st BMX I ever owned and started me on my 20 year semi professional BMX riding career!
Also looking out for a Schwinn Slik Chik, I have the Fairlady and the Stardust, want a Slik Chik to complete the girls collection!
