I am doing some welding work on the Fiesta and am planning on preepping it before I take it to be professionally resprayed. However I am at the limits of my budget already and can't really afford to get it transported, so what would I need to put back on the Fiesta to be legally alowd to drive it the 10 miles from my house to the spray shop. It is mostly country roads but it does pass through one market town so I would like to be completely legal during the journey. Incase it makes any difference, it is a 1983 Mk1 Fiesta with fog light reverse light, drivers and passenger mirror, all round seat belts and is currently just shell, brakes suspension, wheels, engine gearbox, loom.

I got my car transported for 20 quid. You really don't want the hassle of getting your car seized, the police seem to love doing this.

Tax, MOT and insurance, number plates, legal tyres, working brake lights - all the obvious stuff that would get you a tug by the police

I will get round to finishing it at some point

Would it need any glass other than the windscreen?

Would it need any glass other than the windscreen? You need to check but I think technically you don't even need a windscreen though you would need to find a position to display the tax disk ;D edit - Also check your insurance on driving around without glass - your insurance company might decide it counts as a modification

I suppose I could just take off the doors, boot and bonnet aswell so I don't need to take them off for spraying, they will be coming off anyway, keep the screen in for the tax disk, all lights, drivers seat belt, number plates and I think that would cover it?

Wouldn't even need the screen. And if you don't have the screen you don't need the wipers or washers either.

Could I then just tape the tax disk to the front panel?

I would put the doors and bonnet back on, you don't need the hassle of arguing the point with an officer - and running without a bonnet can get you done for being a risk to pedestrians (risk from hot parts, moving parts, sharp edges etc)

You could book an mot for that day then all you need is insurance. Test has to be pre-booked though.

well as long as its tax'd n mot'd and insured and looks like a car i guess there would be no reason why you'd get a tug tho
surely tho if its not on the road, you could weigh in the tax and that would cover costs of transport??

It's only off the road for just under a month now, so I don't think there is any point in making it SORN, I wouldn't get any money back now would I?

Its been off the road for 2 days, in which time the DVLA website has been having 'essential maintenance' so I haven't been able to SORN and now it is just under a month until I have to re-tax it. It has been uninsured for 2 days and I have swapped the policy onto a Mazda Demio. I will get a new policy for when it is back on the road.

Dashboard!? What's ruling on that? Not sure of the technicalities but it's very useful for holding the speedo (which you need) & other bits in place I asked about MOT'ing a classic that had just had it's windows smashed by mindless morons poor misunderstood darlings, the MOT station told me no glass is needed for an MOT I would still go with the other posters - £20 to get it transported is a cheap way to save yourself a load of hassle. Also worth thinking - if it looks like a stripped shell on wheels, expect any passing police to stop you just to check it over. Will you insurance cover you driving a VERY modified car (I think they might count no glass as a modifiction ) ps. Not saying that's what I'd do - just saying it seems like the sensible way forward ;D Good luck sorting it

I've done 25 miles and through Wakefield town centre and halfway to Leeds in the same situation. I put the bonnet and drivers door on and that was about it. No glass, 1 seat and the steering wheel. Got some funny looks but no pullage.
