Cheers guys! didnt get much further yet didnt get round to buying a jack waiting for the garage to call and they never did, guess they don't want a Capri stuck in their workshop for a few days with no axle. I'm busy with work so wont have much time till first week of October anyway now! Might go and pick up a Halfords Advanced one tomorrow and try and make start myself as i've got Monday day off but we'll see. I did notice someone on here is selling an Atlas Axle but with a lower ratio to mine (3.4) its probably not worth is as I'm thinking i should stick with the one i know maybe but if i did buy another how to you balance them? i know id have to mark mine when it goes off for rebuild so its not out of balance?

So the nocking noise was..... (drum roll) a bad Tie Rod. I took it to a great garage near my folks in Stoke-On-Trent. They did points, plugs, timing, tie rod and fan belt adjustment for about the same as 1 hours labour here in London At least its safe and drives nice and smooth now. No more updates on this car. Its definitely time for an oil change soon and maybe a coolant swap as its mainly water now since messing with the thermostat.

i did bounce the front and the passenger side is creaking a bit. i notice its doing it over bumps a bit too. Sending it too the garage tomorrow for points so will ask them to check it out. I had a look at the gear box mount and it looks ok but i don't know much. Engine seems solid when you try to rock it.

I was really really lucky this year and had a friend who took me along to Goodwood on friday as part of his 50th birthday. It was a totally different world than i know ( i turned up in a mk3 Escort) but my god it was brilliant!! i saw 2 Jags crash although i know thats not what its about but, the drivers really are pushing these cars like they used to. Its worth the trip and to walk around the pits was something else. will try to add pics at some point. I really want to go to the Goodwood event in April from seeing previous years videos.

Over the last couple of months i'm noticing what feels like a knock when i accelerate and let off the Gas. If i do it gently it doesnt seem to happen but if i accelerate up to 2nd gear then have to start breaking for something you feel (not really hear) what seems like a nock. Could this be gearbox or engine mounts? i was wondering if its the suspension as i've got a creak coming from the passenger side at the moment.

Any updates on this one man? You read my mind!! I was just about to add a couple of things to this thread. Basically for the last couple of weeks i've been away Recording an album in Manchester, Then had my Dads 70th then went on tour for a week in the Netherlands and Finland playing with an Artist called "Yola", back to rainy England to play with B.B. and only just got back to London haha. Heres my Dad going out in his Spitfire on his 70th ( and my workhorse Escort) So this is my only progress so far haha! Cant get the best photo of it but i bought this old pool ball on a tour somewhere with the intention of making it a gear stick... looks pretty cool i think. Metal sleeve inside and on the last turn the 6 faces the right way Now down to the Serious stuff .... The Diff and Leaf SpringsI did a little ringing around today for a quote on the diff bearings. A couple of places came back with around £200 so i'm very happy with that. One place Old Ford Autos near the M4 said i could drive the car there (which would work better for me as most places want just the Axle) i'm yet to get through to Southern Axles in Watford but hear great things about them and they're really close. any experience anyone? The only thing i'm thinking is... The car could do with new leaf springs and i was gearing up to do this myself as i was guessing i'll have to take the axle off and take it somewhere for the Diff bearings... if i don't i'm unsure weather to get some new springs sooner and give them to the diff guys? i'm guessing they will have to take the axle off anyway and if the old springs are old they may cause problems? although this way round i'm a little gutted to not do some of the the work myself as its supposed to be my project car. I also don't know if with brand new springs and lowering blocks will the car level up? I had Burtons Top Mounts / Lowering Springs fitted along with standard shocks in March so now i'm doing the back I want to to avoid the hot rod nose down look and i can imagine a capri with that stance would handle horribly ?? although might look cool as hell haha! Any thoughts? Heres a pic of it next to my girlfriends Aygo... the back on this side is a bit lower than the other. Also got myself down to Ace Cafe the other night for an American cruise night... getting a little inspired to make it more of a muscle car look somehow. Need some better wheels after all this sorting out for a start, they looked massive on my Escort but tiny on this Capri haha

An easy way to test the temp gauge is to disconnect the wire to the sender unit on the block, and ground it to body earth/battery negative, turn the ignition on and see if the gauge maxes out as it should. If the gauge deflects enough (ideally to full-scale deflection, i.e. indicating 'hot'), then you either have a duff sender unit or the contacts to it need cleaning up. Tested the gauge again today and it shoots right up but lightly touching/ grounding it doesnt do anything. I tested it with a volt meter and was getting about 4.9v so i'm wondering if the connection is just bad. Thanks for the offer of this!! if it turns out to be the gauge i'll definitely take you up on this. The garage said that the pulling to the left can only be the leaf springs as tracking/ alinement is good. tyre pressure is good and the brakes are perfect... its slightly lower on one side at the back. To stave off the blues of impeding costs of diff bearings and leaf springs i did a little spraying. I always wanted the front to be black and a mk2 grill. spent a few days on and off re doing the white headlight surrounds and resprayed the new grill. Had to spray the surounds of the lamps as they looked very grey compared to the new black parts. I'm struggling to get the new grill to fit as of yet and it needs the ford badge gluing back on but, I'm away for a couple of weeks now too so thats its for a while. Failing this not working i might spray the old grill black and put that back on. I was thinking of de chroming the mk2 grill but keeping the center chrome FORD badge ... we'll see. Also need the lip for the bonnet as that was always missing.

Spoke to soon... pool of water is back. I think its the top hose as it looks a bit cracked a side of the jubilee clip. I've tightend it down a little bit more as pressing on the lip of the hose produces water. This probably will make it worse but i'm thinking i might chuck on the old motorcraft one i've been keeping under the seat... cant be bothered but i have another big drive up to Manchester Thursday so probably for the best. For now i've used the last of the black spray can i bought for my Capri's Grill on the bumper as it was looking scabby. Didnt take a pic of after but it looks so much better.

I have a 1979 Capri and I was thinking in January I can apply for it to be tax exempt (I still want to MOT it) . As of yesterday I found out it was built in June 1979 so it’s already 40 years old. I heard if you could prove the chassis number you could apply and the car already has an MOT till November (although no certificate) do we think this is possible to do it now? Will just wait otherwise
Sorry if this has been answered but I couldn’t find anything about a car on the verge of tax exemption and without having a physical MOt I guess I might struggle ? Can I get the certificate from somewhere ?
Cheers!!

Just got it back and they said its a 3.7 Diff and its definitely an Atlas from the look of it. Actually just looking at the original Retrorides Advert and it says "stronger 3.75 Atlas axle"... what Bullplop. I should have known it was a bearing sound rather than stuck on brakes... oh well its my problem now. Went for a local drive around. Still not getting anything out the temp gauge so need to investigate that... might be a faulty unit and its pulling to one side when i brake now I'll just message them back over that. will try to look tomorrow morning as I'm off to work.

Depends whether the noise is down to worn-out diff CROWN wheel/pinion cogs, in which case probably quite expensive, or just worn wheel bearings, or adjustments of the meshing of the cogs, in which case, fairly cheap. How many miles has it done, and do you know if the diff has ever had an oil change? It says about 78k on the clocks. cant imagine its done much more even if thats not correct. The garage said they would change the oil although i phoned before and i don't think they have. Should get it back tomorrow. I guess its just figuring out what it is that needs doing. A few people mentioned a new axle. I'm going to try and get hold of Martin from Capri Gear tomorrow and see if he has anything or at least to price up. It seems like unless the garage come back and say their guy can do a rebuild for a reasonable price I'm going to have to make a decision about what I'm doing with it. I know that the Car needs better leaf springs too as they're flat... so it would probably be worth doing those and the Diff or Axle at the same time. I guess if i bought second hand springs i might not need lowering blocks like i would new ones too. (the front of the car has lowering springs). I'm just going to run into a fair few hundred pounds more than it might be worth at this point unless i find bits cheap and do it all myself. being a novice I'm concerned about being stuck with a half dismantled car on the drive with a broken leaf spring bolt or something haha!! At least they said the car is decent enough underneath and the brakes are great so... i'll definitely drive it more now but just local. I know there is differences in Diffs but i don't know a lot about LSD diffs vs what i guess i have and what is good for what purpose if you get me?

I have - It's just the main loom underneath and there isn't a load of slack hence the struggle. I managed to prise mine out enough to clean up the connections and spray with WD40 for prevention of future issues. Bear in mind, it's a ford. There may be more or less slack on the loom on yours than mine? Cheers for the heads up! I will attempt it again later this week. I guessed the main loom might be pretty tight under there. will have to go cautiously. Update: So I took the Car to the garage today so they could check it out before i plough anymore money into the car. Asked them to go over the brakes Check the suspension mounts (rear) Check the leak on the gear box and diff Check the clunking from the front All the above not too bad they said. The car is sold with a little bit of rust here and there but nothing major at all and the brakes are good. They're going to overhaul the rear brakes on Wednesday but, it looks like my noise is coming from the diff to me it sounded like the callipers sticking on the drum but he said its the bearings. They're going to try new oil in it but said it probably wouldn't do much. He know a guy in Watford who could rebuild it and will call to get a price... i guess its going to cost loads so not really what i was hoping for . What do you think i'm looking at price wise?

Just reading your Capri thread and saw this car mentioned, I think it was this that I saw on Sunday just past. It was under a arch outside Limehouse Dlr, my 7 year old shouted 'Hey dad look' and pointed to this tidy motor.I was on the main road and just got a glimpse but didn't stop to grab a pic for spotted section. Looked great! wish I had a proper butchers Haha yeah that’s me! It’s my main car for giging about town in and I was playing a small Sunday afternoon gig at the Craft Beer place on the corner . Glad it was spotted and it’s great your 7 year old is into cars too! I always wonder if anyone spots me in the old girl 😀

Anyone have any info or know this Garage? my Capri has Williams Garage NR30 5AA on the number plate. Would love to know more than the little info on the internet. i wonder what era they had my capri to bother to swap the plates for their own.

Normal spray paint will be fine for the cam cover. Just rub it down well, prime it and then spray. A decent clear laquer afterwards will help keep it good. Also, it can't help that your fuse box lid is missing. Can't be helping the electric issues you are having. Ask Martin if he has a spare one? Have the clear cover and black top cover on the way . I was just waiting for one at a sensible price. Anyone pulled out the fuse box to a Capri before? I unscrewed the two retaining screws and it would hardly budge. Concerned that I’m going to pull off all the connections underneath pulling hard? I want to do this to check the connections for side lights and dash lights
