Normal spray paint will be fine for the cam cover. Just rub it down well, prime it and then spray. A decent clear laquer afterwards will help keep it good. Also, it can't help that your fuse box lid is missing. Can't be helping the electric issues you are having. Ask Martin if he has a spare one? Have the clear cover and black top cover on the way . I was just waiting for one at a sensible price. Anyone pulled out the fuse box to a Capri before? I unscrewed the two retaining screws and it would hardly budge. Concerned that I’m going to pull off all the connections underneath pulling hard?

Will remember this ZXRob I tried a couple of Ford garages in manchester for simple things and they couldnt get me anything, they said to me they only stock parts up to 10 years.

Interesting about the VV carb. i keep thinking of doing a weber update on mine but its tricky to find the right one for a 1.1 it seems. Are you on electronic ignition on this model? mines on points

Update:
A bit gutted today as i swapped over the new sender unit for the temp gauge and oil pipe union to replace the old electronic sender unit... I found out very quickly when i was at a set of lights why the oil presser union had been swapped... oil all over my feet and running down the dash. luckily i wasnt too far so was able to walk back and put the old unit back in. i guess someone was using it as a blanking plug. The pressure seemed good though, the gauge was at half and when i gassed it went a little bit above. I'm guessing this is better than being at the bottom haha!
The temp gauge still doesnt work but i also havent probably got the best connection on it yet as its only being held on the unit by one screw on the end. Sorry for the lack of pics !

Decided it was time to be brave, re-tax it and hit the road! Since changing the wheels i noticed the other day when turning it around the clicking has stopped... maybe the old wide wheels were too much for it. Initially all was not well at all as dials, lights and indicators stopped working. Turns out to be a dodgy fuse bit of wiggling around and they all came back to life I i've got a CD player working so naturally went for a cruise listening to the Eagles haha Turns out its about twice as long as my girlfriends Aygo. Need to test this with a multimeter and make sure the wires are the right way around! knowing this car it could be that but the dash lights still don't work and drivers side, sidelights front and back plus the numberplate lights. When i returned as was messing about under the bonnet i noticed after a while of standing bubbles appearing in the fuel filter i added. Is this normal? i can see any signs of a leak on the floor and once it was running / immediately stopped it wasn't doing it. In a week i'll probably book it in with my local garage (used to old fords ) as i want to brakes to be checked over and maybe i'll order some braided hoses. I would do this myself i'm pretty sure i could do it but i don't like the idea of jacking the car up at the rear as i'm concerned with the age of the springs and it becoming unstable on my little halfords 2 ton jack. If it fell i'd be in a world of pain so maybe i'll spend on this. Might sound a bit soft but i should drive it before bad weather kicks in. Re last comment I definitely want the engine bay to look cleaner and will take this onboard. I'll get some black hamerite for the servo as i want to do some patches underneath too. With the Fan and the Rocker Cover... what paint do people use for hot surfaces?

A lick of paint on that rocker cover would cheer up that engine bay no end. Glad your working through the issues. Thinking of going for classic blue when I get round to it .

Well! it alive!! turns out the tank terminals were the wrong way around and the temp gauge works by grounding it! talking to Martin from Capri gear its must be wired wrong too so I might be able to save the temp sender unit once i correct it. ordered the correct oil unit from Martin at the same time so fingers crossed by latest next week it'll all be working. Added a inline filter pre carb too ( i know its missing a jubilee clip at the moment)

I see! i wonder why thats in there!! I know i don't know a lot (as we can tell) but who ever owned this car somewhere down the line really did some strange things. then again its had a few owners!
Will look up in the haynes getting the sender out of the tank to test it. I'm guessing its more difficult with a full tank though?

I'm turning my attention to the Temp, Fuel & Oil gauges now as the dash is still apart so if i need to pull the clocks this would be a good time i guess. My dials look like this when the ignition or car is on (Fuel rises from nothing to full, I have been keeping the tank full but when i got the car it wasnt full but still the same) I don't really know what I'm doing but i pulled the connections off the tank and it didnt rise. I was told to short these two connections together and see what the gauge does, is that right? My assistant is out of town till late tomorrow late so i couldn't try this. I cleaned up the terminals and put some copper slip on them, connecters back on... no change. I checked the voltage while they were disconnected, ignition on and it read 4.88v not sure if this tells anything other than its sending some voltage although is this the correct voltage ? I wanted to pull off the temp gauge and ground this to see if the gauge moved (i think this is the right test?) but cant get it off at the moment, it just keeps spinning round so i'll try it again tomorrow. Lastly with the oil... someone has disconnected this in the past. Something seems to be missing between the sender unit and the pipe or, they're the wrong unit to pipe?? Once these are working i'll be happy to take it out and about.

Its alive!!! Cheers ZXRob !!! bought a can of easy start from halfords and it fired right up! I took the bottom pipe off the fuel pump and it poured out! after that took the top of the K&N off and blasted a bit of easy start in there!! That's why I recommend ensuring the fuel return is reconnected. Having owned 10(11? 12? - something like that) Capris, I've found that they always start better after standing with it working. Fitting the EFI from a Sierra or Granada is also worthwhile, if you can find it these days. Thats fair enough. i will sort this out in the very near future. i thought it was already connected but maybe its connected the wrong way round as i said before the pipe above the capped off pipe is the return at the moment.

While you're fiddling around with the carb, it's worth reinstating the return to the tank that's got the bolt in it. Someone mentioned the return (which seems to go back under the car ) is the higher pipe you can see on the left ?

You just blow down it ? Will try have a go at gettin the bottom line off soon. Should I see fuel if all is well?
Also I’m sure it wouldn’t but during our experiment my mrs didn’t give it any gas. That wouldn’t make any difference of course ?

I remember my Dad saying we did 100 in our 1986 Escort 1.4 GL but i think he was having me on as i couldnt see the spedometer. Been in a few fast cars as a kid but don't think they ever got over 100 as it was short bursts in an MR2 or Sierra Cosworth etc around town.
Personally -Saxo (car 1) couldn't go over 85mph. -Escort mk5 1.5 Mistral, definitely remember doing 104mph in this and feeling impressed. -Escort mk3 1.1 85mph tops again (wouldnt like to do 100 in this tbh) -Focus mk1 1.4 estate... probably the last time i went 100 in my own car. I remember passing a Porsche at 105 on the m40 and the steering felt really lite... let the power ease off and went back down to 70... a pretty horrible experience haha.

It could be the fuel pump it could also be the ignition as you have been in the loom recently if you have the ballasted ignition system and it's not connected properly that would make a big difference as it would crank but not have enough for the ignition. Yeah that’s my next port of call if fuel seems ok. It does have the ballest but someone’s apparently by passed this in the past, I’m guessing it didn’t work . Thinking of upgrading this system in the future as it’s a Sierra dizzy/module at the moment .

I think I have a NOS fuel pump to fit this. I can check on monday. Some had replaceable diaphragms so that may be an option. I think they should be available as it was such a common engine up to the late 80's. Easy test is to disconnect the inlet pipe from the carb and feed it into a jam jar then crank the engine over. Fitting a cheap inline fuel filter before the pump will protect the pump and carb from tank poo or fuel line debris. If it's the original ford fuel line it could have started suffering with modern fuel running through it. If you have one hanging around dude let me know. I think it might be worth changing and they seem pretty available if not. Still haven’t got around to testing the pump yet with being busy and heading away for a few days. Will do as soon as I get 5 mins though. Really can’t wait to get this running again. I sold the original wheels to a lad on Friday who mentioned upgrading the carb to a twin Webber and upgrading the ignition system to a racing one... got me thinking.

I guess it is a Manual fuel pump on this. They don't like standing for longer periods. Get a bit of easy start and get a mate/your lads/a helpful neighbour to turn it over whilst having his/her foot down on the accelerator and you give it a bit of a squirt into the carb. I see it's got a K and N filter so you can spray directly into that or take it off and spray carefully into the carb. Don't put your head over the top it may backfire and I am not sure how BB feels about eyebrow-less guitarists! I'm thinking it might be best to get a new pump as its so temperamental with cutting out anyway. is there anyway of testing these? I also need to check the auto choke but i don't really understand them yet haha. its all a learning curve! Will be carful haha BB told me to not slide over the bonnet as we have gigs to do Hope your enjoying the Escort mate! I think i need to do front suspension bushes or struts on mine. getting a creak on one side. Will be watching your thread dude!
