I bought the car in early January to use as a spare daily runabout whilst changing the engine in my Dolomite, but now the engine work is complete, I no longer really need the Acclaim. It has been a reliable daily, always starting in sub-zero temperatures at 5am for work. I drove it up to the Autosport Show in Birmingham (110 miles from me) the day after purchasing, it performed surperbly there and back in the cold and miserable conditions with no faults or concerning noises, even returned about 34mpg which was nice considering it was 70mph most of the way! This car was an ex-demonstrator sold to a lady who owned it for 29 years, only then to be sold to the service engineer for his kids to learn to drive in, that didn't happen so it was sold on to someone else, then was bought by a body shop owner who was going to tidy up it up and perhaps respray it, but he rarely had time for it, so it was then sold to me. The car is in reasonable condition for it's age, with only the rear o/s arch and front valence exposing obvious rust, there are dings and scratches all over it which the pictures don't really show but overall the car is still in a very presentable condition, although it does leak slightly into the footwell and boot. The engine runs a trifle lumpy when cold but is fine when warm, I presume the carbs are well tuned as it does not 'run on' when turned off after a long drive, but nor is there a wishful surge of power when you pull the choke out.
For those unsure of the Acclaim model, it is essentially a re-badged Honda Ballade, which itself is a saloon version of the Mk2 Honda Civic, with the differences being Twin Carburettors as opposed to single, it has a more luxurious interior and other minor details. It easily qualifies for classic car insurance and being a 1.3, it falls into the lower tax band. Parts are easily obtainable through websites like Rimmer Bros. and advice can be found on the Triumph Dolomite Club forum, where many of the members own Acclaims, or for parts and advice contact Barry McGrath at triumph_acclaim@yahoo.co.uk, Also included in this sale is a list of parts that can be purchased from Auto Service (Pontypool) Ltd.
