Don’t worry everyone. It’s not having a standard Type 9. It’s having a Tracksport gear kit fitted with needle rollers. The guy who builds the kit used to work for Quaife so definitely knows how a curse word gearbox is made so has designed this one to work. The Tranx gearbox in my Escort can cope with 250 bhp and this is reputedly stronger with the needle rollers and light weight gears so the synchros don’t get smashed. I suppose there are many better competition gearboxes out there but come with hefty price tags. This is £1200. Not to be funny, but if that gear kit can only handle 250hp it isnt going to last long behind the 16v. If you haven't parted with any money for the type 9 yet, take a look at the Merc 6 speed cdi gearboxes from the w203. Those are a direct fit to your 16v engine and are far stronger that any re-worked type 9 ever will be, £300 from anywhere you look and safe up to 450nm/380ftlb. Or if you want an absolutely bombproof gearbox, there are adapter kits to fit the BMW gs6 gearbox to the merc engines. Safe up to 1200nm/800ftlb.

It can happen, but normally its the rubber bushes that have perished in the end of the linkage. Replace those with brass ones and reset the selector location, it will feel like a different car.

I would have thought they would treat that as 50/50 blame, but if your insurance are admitting liability that may be why they arent as helpful as they could be. Not telling you what to do, but from what you've said I'd find a better insurance policy come renewal time. There's no way a rear end shunt would be contested as 50:50 unless you had footage showing a massive brake test for no reason. It happens, not every time but it does happen.

They said I can't have a courtesy car until they decide what to do. If it's a repair then I can have one. If it's a write off then no. Hoping it will be decided soon after taking it. Was the accident your fault? Which insurance company are you with?

I had a shunt in the Merc back in 2019, lady pulled out in front of me so I pursued it as a no fault claim. Anyway the insurance company wanted to take mine away to access it, I refused to let the car out of my sight so they had to send someone to my house instead. Mine was a cat S write-off, so they gave me market value and let me keep the car which I still drive now.
You should have been offered a courtesy car as yours is un-driveable (rad damage). My insurance had a brand new Volvo S90 courtesy car on my drive the same day as the accident, no questions asked.

My advice is to use land rover engine rubbers, and make your arms to suit them. The simple solid round ones with a thread out of each end like the old Cortina ones? Yep, nice and simple.

Still got to find/make mounts. There are probably Mercedes mounts that will fit like a glove but unless someone has noted the height and offset I'll probably be making some. Actually, did the M103 have some kind of damper between the engine and body? I thought I saw a picture of one once but might be thinking of the belt tensioner damper. I can't see anything on the EPC for W124s or R107s with M103s. Finally is there much difference in NVH between fluid-filled & solid rubber mounts? The latter would be much easier to use but if I'm making engine mounts from scratch I'm only doing it once. I'd go custom with the mounts, but the closest that might work would be from the w126 300se. It's also the w126 where you have seen engine dampers on a m103, they stopped using them when the introduced the fluid filled mounts. My advice is to use land rover engine rubbers, and make your arms to suit them.

How much do you take off the front of the flywheel? Is it the logical 'remove the trigger wheel part' or do you cut into the curve near the face at the front? When you remove the lip to the rear, wouldn't it throw out the position of the clutch cover plate? Yep just machine off the trigger wheel, there's quite alot of it! Regarding machining the face of it flat, we do this so the flywheel can take a sachs 765 cover plate. Those are rated to take over 600nm and a must for big hp engines, the weight saving is just a bonus.

The Valeo flywheel you have there bolts directly onto the M103 crank, you don't use the bearing or spacer shown on the EPC. The bearing that is in the flywheel is all you need. Be careful when you slide the gearbox onto the engine, that bearing is a needle roller type and is easily damaged. The recess in the rear of the flywheel can sometimes need machining out a few mm if it wont sit properly on the nose of the crankshaft, some do, some don't. The other option is to carefully grind 3mm off the end of the crank, sounds scary but isnt. Wow that was quick - thank you so much. I can zip it all up confidently now, That SM flywheel weighs a heck of a lot - reminded me of the crazy Russian guy (no not that one!) who added 4 flywheels to a Lada. You can machine them down quite alot if your not using the trigger wheel on the back. I machine the face down flat for the 606 builds too, takes even more weight off. You can see a flat one in this vid:

By the way your two mystery switches on the dash are probably wired up to the duo valve, it controls the flow of coolant through the heater matrix. That makes sense! Is there something broken that it's hotwired? Is it fixable? The heater controls on the dash can go wrong, the 2 wheels that control the temp burn out. Some people bypass them with a switch, but I've never seem them mounted like that. I'll bet if you pull the dash panel off those switches are spliced directly into the harness, an easy fix is just change the pannel from a breakers yard.

Found this plastic "thing" in the doorpocket. Does anyone have a clue? Peter C carat 3.6 ? That looks like one of the plastic "hooks" that hold the doorcard onto the door, only Mercedes do it like that so people break them off when trying to get inside the door. You would need the injector lines and throttle cable setup from the donor vehicle, possibly a little mod to the fuel lines depending on year. And take the bulb out of the warning light on the dash. Doable yourself if your handy with the spanners. Have a look on here if you need any more info: link

I custom build tipping bodies for new versions of that, the machinery firm next door to me sells alot of them to colleges and national trust sites. They are 48v and not road legal, if you want something road legal look at a Kioti Mechron.

Possibly. Not being funny but there looks like a lot of corrosion under that primer, did you take it back to clean shiny metal before spraying it?
