LOVE IT!!! (I'm a huge deutschophile so may sway me slightly) Great machine the T4, mate of mine ran one till nearly a million km mine´s not that far behind either, 880,000 on its first engine and box and still going strong! Oh and I was in Rostock in January. Interesting is what I'll call it... ...small world eh? Hey, Oldbus! how are ya? good to see you with another project. I like the fact that the interior already has storage bins and cubbies ready for camping! neat project.....I would think a set of 18" rims would look great. JP Hi JP, things are slowly getting back to normal over here at oldbus garages mate. I unfortunately had a stroke a year ago which has slowed me down a bit so i won´t be able to knock out the bus as quick as i used to but i´m happy ( and lucky) to be able to take the T4 and hopefully enjoy it once it´s finished.

This has so much potential! What are the plans exteriorwise? Leave it as it is with a decent drop and wheels? yes and no mate, i´ll be giving it a respray and i won´t get away with dropping it too much. I´ve been looking out for a decent set of wheels, i think 18´s should do quite nicely. Looks like a great base! Is it stripped inside or can you sleep on the stretcher? The stretcher is missing but that´s not a problem as i´ll be building a decent bed big enough for me and the misses. The rest of the interior is more or less intact which is good as i´m a lousy joiner and don´t want to be faffing around with wood to much. I´ve got a few days off so i´m off out into the garage for a play

Hello all I´m not to sure if our new project is a bit too new for Retro rides. If it is i´m sure David or Simon will give us a shout. If it is ok here´s our new welding project, a 1998 T4 ex Ambulance that we´ll be restoring and converting into a camper....well that´s the plan anyway.
I popped up to Rostock on Saturday which was a 600 mile round trip and dragged it with my mates Vito back home....
it´s not in very good condition but it was cheap, i´ve always fancied one, they´re good to drive, did i mention it didn´t cost much? ....and i´m notoriously skint so let´s see how we get on.
Happy days, regards from sunny Germany, Dave

Hi guys, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The Estate is still parked up at my mates place and i haven,t touched the Coupe since the move. The house and garden are slowly looking half decent again so that i can hopefully get the carport built this summer and then get the garage back up and running before winter.
Cheers, Dave

Thanks for checking in mate. All is well over here, we´ve just bought ourselves a new house or should i say a new garage with a house and garden attached to it so Cortina updates will have to wait a few months until everything else is sorted Here´s a sneak preview ...so if anyone fancys a rather tasty W123 Coupe and matching trailer give me a shout as i´m now skint and need to buy a carport and a new kitchen

Golden wheel centers work on several body colors, but wouldn´t be my choice for red cars. Here black would be my color of choice for the centers (and polished lips). A well approved recepy of Dr.Porsche: But that´s just MHO... I know what you mean mate but i agree with BC on this one. I´m not too sure about the gold either but to be fair in that last pic of mine there are no tyres on the wheel and therefore a bit more gold is showing. We´ll see how i get on once i´ve got the engine back in and the front wings back in place. If the gold doesn´t work i can always repaint them.... Thanks Tom, some nice stuff in there too. Golden wheel centers work on several body colors, but wouldn´t be my choice for red cars. Here black would be my color of choice for the centers (and polished lips). A well approved recepy of Dr.Porsche: But that´s just MHO... I love black wheels but the trouble with black on a basket weave style wheel is you loose all the detail it just becomes a blob of black surrounded by shinney surrounded by blob of black - might as well just have black steels with a silver rim Now a mid grey might work well and not "steel" the detail......... Soz couldn´t have put it better myself mate mmm 2 door Granada estate... Good idea mate but definately won´t be happening Have just read all 16 pages Dave - and all I can say is that I am bowled over by your skill. Superb project! That´s very kind of you, much appreciated. I'm biased - gold centres on a red car work.... ...especially on an old Ford Me too. Might be a little bright, though... You might be right mate, i´ll put it all back together, get it running and through the TÜV and classic car engineers report, then i can have aplay with the wheels. Like i said if push comes to shove i´ll give them a onceover withthe spray gun.... Update 16.08 Well i´ve ripped the engine out of the donor and have stripped it down. The previous owner reckoned he´d changed the oil regularly and that it should be ok.... Good job i checked..... and that job it was cheap!!!!!!! Well i´m soaking it all in petrol for a couple of days. These engines are bombproof and i´ve never been let down by one yet, so hopefully after a bit of a cleanup and a carb and 5speed manual gearbox conversion i should be ok. Cheers, Dave Fingers crossed.

Update 14.08 Real life and the Escort has been slowing me down the last couple of weeks but as the Escort is now at the scrappies i can do some catching up. Here´s the view out of our kitchen window, hasn´t changed much just delete Escort and insert Granada (so my wife says) It´s one of the the last proper Granadas and inmy view it has one of the last proper engines Ford made. 2.8l of Colognes finest The reason i bought it was that it was cheap, had loads of goodies on it, wasn´t expensive, has a 2.8 in it and did i mention, it was cheap!! Nobady has anything to give away these days and although the seller needed it moved quick there was a good reason he was selling it cheap. It´s a non runner and to make it more interesteing it´s been parked up for years and several so called mechanics have had a go at trying to get it to run. I´ve had plenty of time to think about it and after a natter with Totti the other day i made the decision that the best way of moving on is rip out all the electrics and Injection stuff (they´re what´s causing the problems anyway) and convert it to carbs. Good thing is i bought a 2.3 V6 for beer money a couple of months ago and can use the manifold and carbs off that to get the 2.8 up and running, well that´s the plan anyway - watch this space. I haven´t been ignoring the estate completely though, my new shocks turned up the other day so got them fitted.... and the wheels turned up. Now you might find this hard to believe but this is the first set of new wheels i´ve ever bought myself. I know they´re cheap and chearful Chinese rubbish but at 350 quid delivered to Germany it wasn´t worth looking around for a second hand set that needed refurbing. The jury is still out on the gold, i might paint them red but that´ll have to wait until i´m sure they´ll clear the front wings. They´re 7x15 ET 20 so it could be tight. They do fit at the back though Cheers, Dave

Update 06.08 Change of plans, the red wheels that i´d ordered and paid for were no longer available so i´ve gone for a set of these instead..... i´m not too sure about the gold so if it looks naff i´ll give them a coat of red that was leftover from the respray. I haven´t got anything done on the Estate the last couple of days as i´ve been busy turning the Escort into cash ....once i´ve flogged the last bits and bobs i´ll hopefully have the Escort paid for, the new wheels and some money in my pocket too so chuffed with that:P Cheers, Dave

While you've got the Escort there, it would be rude not to try the five-spokes on the Cortina... I do like the idea of the Mustang wheels though, factory with a twist. You´re right i should try them out but after a lot of faffing about i´ve ordered a set of these, so they´re surplus to requirements..... I was thinking that the spoiler needs to be sat on the roof... Looks like a pretty tidy example, though. Have you got seats to replace what you're taking out? They all look good on photos mate, i´ve definately driven worse though. As far as the seats go i´m not faffing around with it, i´ve stripped it of all it´s goodies, most of them are sold already and the rest goes over the weighing bridge on Friday so that i can get back to rebuilding the Cortina

Keep it Ford Mustang 15" Turbines Intersting alternative, i´ve never seen them on a European Ford either. Update 26.07 Well it´s not a proper update as such as i haven´t touched the Estate today. Once i´d knocked off work i popped down to to Gelsenkirchen to pick up the seats that i´d bought for the Cortina. They´re Recaros out of a 1990 Escort cabrio. The problem with them is that they´re pretty expensive sold on there own, so i had to buy the whole car to match..... Believe it or not the whole car cost me what a single seat would have cost so chuffed with that!!! The seller needed it shifted fast ....so i did The front seats will clean up well and i´ll try to use the material off the rear seat to recover the one in the estate so that they match. ...and the rest of the Escort will be going on Debay to pay for the seats

In the August edition of Classic Ford Magazine there's a 2-door Mk5 Cortina estate in white running on black 5-spoke 15" Revolutions which I think works well although the rears might be a tad wider than you're planning to use. Ah, I've found a photo. ...a tad wider ha, you make that sound so easy!! I don´t know if you´ve read the build thread to that Cortina but there´s more work gone into that rear axle than i´ve put into my whole build They´re five stud by the way so wouldn´t fit without a lot of work, you´re right though mate they do look good. Dammit. You went and made me curious and now I know I can get a set of Turbos delivered to my door on the other side of the world for less than a grand. I can't even get second hand wheels from the other side of the state for that price. These Ronals only cost 114Euros each plus popstage to Brisbane. I wrote to the seller yesterday asking him how much the shipping costs would be to Australia but he hasn´t got back to me yet (he probably thinks i´m taking the p**s) what about split-rimming some suitable oem alloys. Or banding some steels? like the steels that are on the car now? I´m not that keen on banded steelies to be honest and the guys that do split rimming over here seem to be getting paid very well for what they do Cortinas use a FWD offset same as sierra/Mk3/4/5escort ect so wheel choice shouldn't be an issue based on FWD or RWD biased wheels ? the capri and RWD escort used the more traditonall RWD offset wheels with more dish. I've ran plenty of cortinas on 7X15 cossie wheels with 225s on the rear and 205s on the front (not lowerd) with no issues so if you stay close to sierra specs you usually cant go wronge, as to my preferance anything close to a 3Dr cossie style is my fav and you can lower later with clearance to spare ? not really a fan of the later latice wheels, been done to death IMHO. How about 5 stud granada Ghia wheels in 14 or TRX wheels from a Ghia ? more work but it will give that factory but moded look ? fair bit of work though but if you like the factory (but not quite) look it may be worth the effort ? TBH effort isn't something you are short of mate I´ve got some TRX Granada wheels hidden in the spares car and great minds think alike Rob, i think i´ll have a go at converting the Cortina to five stud at a later stage when i´ve got bored with the BBs replicas Nice one but i prefer them polished mate..... Thanks for that. I do like those wheels but i don´t think they´d work on the Cortina. ... Thanks for all your effort on Photoshop mate but those Porsche wheels are not going to happen Update 25.077 Well my holiday is over and i´m back at work so the updates are now smaller and take a bit longer to do I gave the Dash has a new coat of paint yesterday so i can slowly start putting it back together again. I still haven´t made up my mind on the wheels justyet, i´m spoilt for choice at the moment unfortunately. Cheers, Dave

How about a freshly refurbished set of period correct porsche 924 teledials? 4x108, 6x15 et20, not so far away from you in Löhne,... Currently on ebay.deThanks for that. I do like those wheels but i don´t think they´d work on the Cortina. The original Ghia wheels do look ok but are just too small and you see them on every second Taunus over here....

I like the BBS rep's but prefer the starmags, shame they don't come in 14 or 15 inch really... Hit the nail on the head there mate, if only the Starmags did them in 14´s/15´s........ I wonder if the RS 4 spokes in 15inch would look any better than the 13 inch ones on a Cortina do?

Hey mate, make sure that I am just saying what I thin, not wanting some know it all. I really love your work and your skills are way past my abilities or the lack of.... I love the Starmags they look period correct and will look good. BBS wheels replicas or not make a turd look good. I love them and I don't think that there is 1 application that is not suitable. The Ronal turbos are again a great wheel but I don't think they will suit your car. You are building a car that (I think) doesn't exist but looks like a factory car. With wheels like the turbo you might spoil that kind of touch. Again mate, your car, your wheels, your dream!! Not the littlest bit of nastiness intended. Just my worthless 2 cents. Cheers mate No probs mate, i know exacty where you´re comimg from. You´re right about the period correct thing, that´s why i´m taking so long to make my mind up.

I ran 195/60/15's on 7 inch Dotz Mugello's on the Legerra for a while. 27mm spacing required to clear the chassis rails which are in the same place as ford escort and cortina inner arches in relation to the hub face of the back axle. This produced the odd side effect of making my capri speedo match my GPS and GPS speedo app on my phone exactly (unlike the 205/60/13's they replaced) They wouldn't suit the 'tina as they have naff all dish. There are a couple of sets of alloys on ebay which might work but they are in the UK... 15" ZCW R5 Gun Metal Grey alloy wheels 4x100/4x108EXIP ALLOY WHEELS 4x108 BBS look a likeThanks for that, i think you find that the Mugellos have an offset of 30 or 40 if i remember right and that´s why you need spacers to get them to work. I´ll not be buying secondhand wheels this time because by the time they´ve been sorted out and repainted i can buy a new set for more or less the same money and even more so if i have to pay for international postage. I´d narrowed it down to the Starmags (13x7)... or the BBS replicas in 15x7 and was going to order the BBS but then i found these yesterday. Ronal Turbos 15x7 ET 28 The Ronal turbos don´t have enough dish and will probably need spacers to get them to work on the Cortina but they do look good. I was surpised to see that you can get them new which doesn´t make it any easier. I think i´ll have another mooch around the Net and see what else i can come up with. Anyway whist i´m still playing around with which wheels i want, i got the enginebay sorted out yesterday. That´s most of the respay finished, well the red stuff anyway. The Dash needs repainting in black, the front axle too and one or two bits and bobs out of the engine bay but with a bit of luck paintwise that should see me more or less finished with the spray gun. Cheers, Dave

15x7 et25 with a 195/50 will be pretty much perfect for a double wishbone Cortina. Tom Hi Tom, that sounds about right to me mate, although i´ll try and get away with 205´s on the back

If it was a MK 3 i´d agree, infact there´s a set going cheap on ebay locally but i the car is too "new" to put Wolfies on it. The 15x7's you've posted. With the plethora of cheap BBS reps available now you should be able to pick up a set for not a lot. Tom That´s my favourite option at the moment Tom. I´ve found these (15 x 7 ET25) on ebay but the seller reckons they won´t fit a Cortina because they´re too wide. Not sure about that, i can see an 8j being too big up front but a 7j should be alright. in my head i see this on starmag 2's with the centres painted black. I prefer the original Starmags although the dish on the Starmags 2 could look quite good. 13x8 RS 4 spokes from Midland Wheel I do like the RS 4 spoke, however i think they look better on a Capri or an Escort. Wenn i see a Cortina on RS 4 Spokes i always think the owner couldn´t be bothered to go out and find something different. Looking at this pic: I suggest a set of citroen (=4x108 if that´s the case on that taunus) 16" steelies in black with such shiny trim rings. I´m not sure that the Citroen steelies would look good mate, it´s definately going to be an alloy wheel. Just not too sure which one at the moment Thanks for all your ideas guys, i´ve still not made up my mind. I know what´ll look good i´d just not sure whether they´ll fit properly or not. I´ve got a set of 14 inch Turbovecs hidden away in the shed... ....the problem is they have a PCD of 5 x 120 ish. Does anyone know a company that could weld up the holes and redrill them to 4 x 108? I think they´d look brilliant on the Estate. cracking finish emerging on this ! boring tech question. fair weather, low humidity, good for "outdoor" painting, have you had any issues with flies and stuff going "oooooooOOO SHINEY" and sticking in your top coat ? As long as they stick in the top coat you´re alright mate, you can polish them out. The problems start when they attack your fresh paint job when you´re doing the first coat. You´ll alway get some dirt or flies and stuff when you paint at home. When i´m painting larger areas i clear out the carport, cover the walls with plastic sheeting and wet the floor to minimize the problem. The most important thing is i don´t do metallic paint and make sure you put enough coats on so that you´ve got a bit of leeway when you start wet sanding it back. Update 23.07 Talking of wetting floors and spraying cars at home....... ....paintwise all i need to do now to finish it off is to respray the engine bay. I dug out the new rear bumper yesterday and covered it in wax before i refitted it. You can´t tell on that pic but even though it was brand new i gave it a new coat of satin black to make sure it matched the rest of the car. Sorry for hiding it all in msking tape but it definately looks the part and i want it to stay that way during the build. Cheers, Dave

I don't know who was responsible for the styling on these Cortinas back in the day but if they're still alive they need to see this. It looks flippin ace! Cheers mate, getting there slowly. Update 21.07 with the temperatures still up in the high thirties i´ve repainted the drivers door on the inside and the sill. The side trim cleaned up nicely so that´s been glued back into place..... Slowly i need to start thinking about which wheels to get. Starmags always look good on a Cortina These 16`s BBS (7,5 & 9J) do look the part but i think 16´s will be a bit too big I took this pic at the Gathering a couple of years ago, very nice. In fact this photo motivated me to get myself a Cortina Estate I could get these on ebay but ET 40 (7x15) probably wouldn´t work I borrowed these off our Christians Sierra (7x15 ET23) I know the ride height needs to come down a bit but i think they´ll do nicely, maybe in a different colour though. What do you guys think? What´s the best wheel for a MK5 Cortina estate? Which ET do i need? Cheers, Dave
