Anyone remember the terrible trio ‘Top Gear’ where JC organised a drag race between many of the so-called ‘supercars’ at I think bruntingthorpe? The TVR blew everything else away Here you go I remember watching this on VHS when I was a kid. Definitely made me want a TVR! Can’t believe how much faster it is than all the other stuff

Not that I’d ever want to wish misfortune on others, but the prices of classic/retro/modern classic cars are largely ridiculous at the moment, so I do hope for some kind of crash to more sensible prices so non-millionaires like myself can afford to buy some decent stuff!

I think the same about the MINI (bini?) It may be a fine car, but mini it is not! Rover designed the first Mini however . Rover also had the 1-Series drawing on the table, called the R30 IIRC. It was meant to take over both the 200 and the 400 ; It's not like both cars were rivalling each other or were very different under the skin either. But it's not like Rover did this alot either throughout the years. It's rumoured Rover even did the Mini SUV first which became the E83 X3. But if we've shown anything, Rover would never have capitalised on both the way BMW did, or make a success of it. You only need to look at JLR, which in theory is partially the legacy of BL (Solihull and Gaydon are now used) >> Austin Rover >> MG Rover Group >> Splintering >> JLR continuing at a number of the old sites, with even many Rover and Land Rover people of the yesteryear still being part of it. I do like the R53, but it would have to be a Cooper S for me ; if it showed anything, it showed that having a small car didn't mean you had to lack safety equipment or live with a biscuit tray for trim finish. Finding a good one these days is hard however in the MCS. I doubt they'll get any cheaper, given what's happening slowly to the Clio 172/182 prices. I sold the Accord Type R and bought an R53 Cooper S as i think they’re a bit of a bargain at the moment. As you say, as a small car they don’t feel cheap or flimsy, although they do have their fair share of rattles and oil leaks! Definitely feel pretty old school in how they drive as well. I think the styling of them is the most ‘pure’ out of the modern Minis, as is the size. However they still get ALOT of hate from the ‘real’ owners!

2 cars got there’s stolen in our office car park. In broad daylight. Absolute scumbags, but they are pretty professional at it.

No one has mentioned the E39 BMW to my surprise... I've been mulling a 530i manual estate which is up for £1400. 230hp and falls below the 2006 tax hike I think any without a shed load of rust are over £3000 now. Same as E36’s. This. I doubt the modern classic tag with these has helped but the truth is these cars like most 00s are now falling into two very distinctive camps: -Ones which have alot of cash spent on them ; they'll still need some and probably always will (they're an old car after all) but keep on top of them and they are a nice old thing -Ones which have been run on a shoestring. Why service a £1k car when you can simply throw it away at the end of the year. The engines and gearboxes make great donors too -Rust ; Man, 00s BMWs love to rust! E46s have now also slipped into this camp. Sure, the 4 pots are cheap to but, but a 330i? My friend struggled to get a clean rot-free one. The £2k cars were junk despite guys telling us they were mint. The 2006 price hike may soon be a price worth paying. Euro 3 cars will no longer be allowed into a number of cities where Euro 4 cars may be. This is one big driver for me still having the Mondeo; I doubt there are many cars as fun or as practical for £1k that can get you to Brum or other Euro 3 banning cities for free. Petrol cars made between 2006 and 2016 are now very few and far between and IMHO the earlier ones may just be worth buying. Yup, The M3 is officially evicted from most cities at this rate being a Euro 3 car. I personally think anything early to mid 2000’s in now the golden era for cheap, fast fun. Anything before that either is knackered or has classic/retro tax added onto any reasonable prices. Bought a Mini Cooper S for £2000, with heated seats, pan roof, good history. Fun, fast-ish (170bhp and plenty of scope for tuning) and can genuinely be driven every day without fear of it destroying itself.

Hi Ross, yeah all good thanks! No worries, unlikely I’ll have anything, although to be honest with the lack of interest I’ve had on the Accord (which would just sneak in) I may well still have it by July!

Obviously this is a club retro rides event, but for us who are members who don’t currently have a track worthy retro will moderns be allowed as well?

I'm sorry but I am inclined to agree that vehicles of this vintage are unsuitable for public roads in 2019. Deep condolences to the affected. Horrible news, so sorry for everyone involved. I disagree, they should be the same as horses and bikes - they could be on normal b-roads and a-roads are fine but motorways should be a no-go

I’d love to find some more Speedhunters type sites which good quality, original content. Alas I think the only reason Speedhunters is able to do so is via the might of EA games funding it in the background, so fairly unlikely to be repeated.

There must be about a grands worth of maintenance alone in the synchro and clutch renewal in the summer. That's a cheap way into a great great car. On very rare occasions I regret having to have a dog friendly car and this is certainly one of them. GLWS. Thanks! Yeah you’re about right there, I’d estimate I’ve spent £1500 over summer getting the important mechanical bits up to scratch!

What a pointless waste of some nice cars! At least they're now being sold on, hopefully some will get saved.
