I'm fairly curse word with mechanics and hopeless with bodywork, my old jalopies live outside and spend a lot of time sat idle over the summer while I work away. Still, as said, between this forum, youtube and a Haynes manual I can get it started again if its being reluctant. Keep on top of things and it'll be worth it for the stupid grin you'll have every time you get in it. If possible find someone on here near to you or a mechanic friend/relative to have a look at it with you. Happy motoring. Sounds like a great little hobby! Thank you Do it, you'll be fine. Buying a car like that is a great way to learn, it will break but it'll be cheap and easy to fix when it does play up which is often not the case with modern stuff. Don't expect it to be 100% trouble free like your mate's brand new Corsa, don't be afraid to get stuck in and you'll have a great time driving what YOU want to drive I can imagine my smugness when it works and his when it doesn't!

I think we need to clarify what you mean by break and therefore lose your savings. It will break down. Parts will break. You will need to work on it. Will you be able to (or willing to learn) fix it? Would it loosing spark, or needing suspension bushes, or carb rebuilding cause you to have to give up and sell at a loss? If the only real concerns are terminal rot or engine/gearbox failure then buy a good one and have fun. If reasonably minor things are going to cause the issues you fear, then maybe think again. Having said that, all cars break, even new ones. I am willing to learn; this whole experience has been fascinating and I really want to become 'self sufficient' when it comes to Car repairs (or best of my ability). If something fairly minor were to occur, where the part replacement was only <£100 then that'd be fine. It's when whole sections of the engine or if a rot hole were to appear and needs welding (or whatever) where costs are the limiting factor. So, yeah ... I really hope I do indeed find a good one!

So my Dad has a 'few questions':
1] How much would a day's worth of Car insurance and breakdown cover be for a car like that (roughly)? 2] What would the tax be like on something like that (roughly)? 3] Would it break if left on the drive over summer 'unused'?

If you like them, go for it, not likely to be any more of a disaster than any other 70's family car within the same price range. From a desirability perspective, they tend to be bottom of the tree and I have certainly never had any temptation to own one. So. If you like them, make the most of your unique taste and get a car at modest price because few others see the appeal. Well I suppose I do indeed have an eccentric taste but anything else that I might have wanted it too pricy anyway. It won't go down in price anyway. ... Right?

As most have already said they were a 70's car that had leaf springs, drum brakes, OHV engines and rust like almost everything else at the time except probably Lancia's, Alfa Romeo's and Fiats but they had some extra rust. Be prepared to do some work on it though and be let down now and then, points, condensers, HT leads.I would definitely have another one if I had space. I'm not worried about ride comfort or handling at all really. All I care about is if the car will break with very light use; if it has a high chance of doing so, then I will have wasted literally all my savings and that worries me!

I don't know why you are faffing about. The pictures and description tell the story of a 38 year old car that is in excellent condition and, apparently, hasn't even seen a welder. Everything about it suggests its been cherished and will need only minimal and regular basic maintenance to keep it reliable daily transport. Seriously, there aren't that many Marinas for sale as it is and the £1500 jobbies Ive seen in the past are nowhere near as clean as this one. Its worth the money, maybe get £100 knocked off the price but you will have a long wait to find as good cheaper and the money you may save you will end up throwing at your new 'bargain' Its a no brainer. Thanks!!

Ive always loved the marina coupe shape, and when i announced to my dad years ago that i wanted to buy one he said 'you don't want one of those, its just a Morris Minor in a party frock' It put me off, but in hindsight plenty of people love the morris minor, and often uprate them using marina bits. Id imagine that as standard they are quite uninspiring, but the potential is massive. I mean, look at the '34' black one. DO IT. HAhaha that's the spirit! I'll keep checking back, and I'll certainly post what my father says. He didn't sound too pleased on the phone when we last spoke so I really do hope he will be on board for this.

Body condition is everything here, the mechanicals are simple and rugged. And later on, the customizing choices for body and mechanicals are too many to count. But keep in mind the fact that this is a rebodied Morris Minor, the suspension is pitiful, brakes no more than adequate (not even that on early 1300s with drums on the front) and not much power from the 1275. I too had a Marina pickup back in the day, with MGB mechanicals and some suspension improvements, it was a lot of fun, especially on wet roundabouts! Not the best car I ever owned but not the worst by a country mile! And Compo, i've seen a few 2.0 Itals with manual boxes, only a few though! Mind you the 2.0 wasn't a common choice at best. Steve Oh okay that seems to be the story for most classic cars. How does this seem for 'body' condition? www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/detail/motors/classic-cars/morris/marina/181572

Hi, As has been suggested, I was around back in the day and although they were styled similarly to the competition. They were always viewed as the poor relation. They didn't rust any worse or better, they had their mechanical problems, trunnions as mentioned but they should be alright if kept lubricated. Their biggest failing was their Triumph based gearbox in the 1275. you could rarely get more than 30 odd thousand miles out of them and leaked all their oil (that maybe chicken and egg). We used to have a saying amongst us that went "BL make good second hand cars, but can't make a brand new car to save their life" Colin The one for sale has nearly 80,000 miles on the clock which is a lot more than 30,000 miles! *eek!* The guy says it drives fine so I assume nothing is wrong with it, but that's a somewhat scary thought. I really don't have the money or expertise to fix something if I went ahead to buy it because it's at the literal top end of my budget; my budget is limited by how much I have. I suppose from what you said it might not be a good idea to go for it, then?

www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C734346# <--- They typically go for £1500+ so part of me thinks that this car is a touch overpriced. Condition looks good. I have actually got another picture of the car which makes me think the level of rusting should be fairly minimal. Is it worth going for it? The guy over the phone didn't seem willing to go much below what he stated. EDIT: Does anyone live near there to go and have a look for me?

I've had a very early 1098 pickup, 1275 facelift pickup and now have a Marlin Roadster based on a 1974 1800TC. Can't think of anything seriously wrong with them to put me off recommending to others. I prefer the 1275 to the 1800 and have done that swop in my Marlin as a far lighter lump. No experience of the 1700. AFAIK the 2.0 (Ital) was only available as an auto. Overseas markets had the option of the B series based 1500 diesel ! Some parts are getting scarce / expensive but probably no worse than any other car of the era. Typically what parts are likely to go? Are parts even likely to go in a car like that? (Thinking of the infamy of BL) Also, don't cars have some compatibility with 'foreign' parts (IE: ones not of the model). Hence, or otherwise, I see lots of cars that have been modified or fixed using completely different parts from different brands of different years etc. Of course, this takes away from its originality but since I'm not rich at all, I wouldn't have much choice.

Probably because they had one, or knew someone who did... [snip] No because they think that my money be better spent elsewhere. Not an invalid opinion but I just detest modern cars; seriously though: up until 6 months ago, I hated all things cars, and then I realised the beauty and history of classic cars. I've learnt interesting things as to how a car works, names of parts; history of car companies, etc. They keep saying that "you'll have literally spent all your money on a car, and it's old so they will break blah blah blah".

Hello everyone! PLEASE DROP IN YOUR OPINIONS ON THE MORRIS MARINA! Thanks! I really want to get this Morris Marina as my first car (turns out Lada is a tough brand to get hold of!), but I just want to make sure I'm not barking up the wrong tree. I've heard the engine is very reliable, and the car itself, if treated well, should be fine. My plan was to prime and wax over it if I did indeed get it to protect it from Rust. Negative or Positive, I'm more than willing to hear what you have to say (it all helps create a more objective picture). EDIT: For light use, are they likely to fail? My parents are very sceptical of this hobby of mine, and I'm doing my damndest to prove otherwise! I don't see how it will break if it is given light use; the one I want is already in decent nick and I think a year outside (before I can get garage space) won't hurt it too much. Since they won't help me, financially, it's all down to me to pay for it; I won't lie, if it breaks that's all my savings down the drain because the resale value will not be high!
