£3000 for that? I don't get the car world ... I want the Morris Marina and it's nearly half the price of this car, and if I dare say so, much better looking (most people find the 70s cars quite cute looking).
That just looks ... old ... not classic. There is quite serious rusting there which would put me off a Marina, for example. Anyway, good luck in selling it.

My 1981 rover sd1 vanden plas has a genuine 14,000 miles on the clock. The car is like brand new and even wears it's original Michelin tyres. I have an mg midget with 24k on the clock but this has had a full nut and bolt resto I would love to have a picture of that if you have it handy! (The SD1)

I don't care what people do as long as they are not trying to rip people off making out a car is better than it is . How many people have bought cars that have supposedly been repaired or restored properly only to find acres of filler , plated rust , cornflake packets and old pants stuffed in the sills ? scary thought!!

Just want to point out I am completely new to the car world and as of yet can't even drive let alone own a car.
This is just speculative.
Oh, and, is it true I can buy a customized plate if no one has made it before? I was thinking SEB 1337 or something like that?

Wow, I just googled the NHTSA number in the OP, this exact same thread has been posted on The Samba, VW Vortex and shoptalkforums this week. Lol, people can use more than one forum! I know but ... it feels like our answers might not be good enough. Just one of those irrational things ...

As I understand it, all cars that are classed as historic vehicles can have them? (Please correct me if I am wrong!!) So if I transfer a modern numberplate of my choice onto an old car then am I allowed to buy a white on black numberplate with a modern reg for a historic car?

I just hope, so much, that another will come up without rust in my price range, before August (thanks time pressure!). I get so anxious about my obsessions and the worst part here is relying on luck; I hate that!
Sounds really fun anyway. Hopefully by August, I can join this prestigious club of cool people that own great motors (where great is not indicative of price, but conducive of character).

Bloody awful things. Love mine to bits, kept it longer now than any other car I've owned, sold it & bought it back once and will never sell it again. Get yourself over to the fastmarinamagazine forum, they are a good bunch over there and will offer an opinion on anything that comes up. Parts can be a pain- panels & trim particularly difficult. The club does recon clutch hydraulics and brake masters on exchange, which is another trouble spot cured. Handling a bit dubious as standard, but there's ways around that, depending on budget and inclination. Disagree about gutless, the 1800 goes pretty well (really quite well in TC form) but runs out of puff with it being a 4 speed gearbox. Gearboxes are pretty much the same in both 1300 & 1800 different ratios but the same (Triumph derived) unit. No 2.0 Ital ever got a manual 'box from the factory but a few have been converted since. They rust, in most places you can think of. Buy one that isn't rusty. Not the first one you see, unless it's not rusty. Nothing mechanical is particularly tricky with them, but yeah, stuff will break and it will cost you money- that goes for any classic car. The clutch will seize if you leave it standing. Various bits will go "boing", generally at really inconvenient times. People will either love it or take the mick, depending on age/ inclination/ arrogance. Chances are the latter will be driving a people carrier, or a German saloon on finance. Don't kid yourself that you'll never need to get the spanners out, but buy a solid one with an open mind and you'll enjoy it. I thought I recognised you from that forum; I just signed up! Thank you for the advice. "Bloody awful" means "interesting challenge" to me

Thanks to everyone for the responses. So I phoned up someone in the Morris Marina owner's club and he wasn't convinced of this particular Marina and said I should wait it out.

Anyone live near Durham (or specifically, live near Darlington) and is willing to view it for me? I won't be allowed to go on my own to see it. Sorry at how complicated this is; believe me, I really wish it wasn't.

For those ... all of you (?) ... who decided to get a classic car, how apprehensive where you of wasting your money? I suppose you all felt competent in fixing it and maintaining it.

Hmmm interesting. So if the paint was very thin ... what would that say; equally, if it was very thick, would that be suspicious or not?

Since I don't have the capability to go to have a look, let's presume I put down a deposit. When I go to pick it up, what checks should I do to see how bad the corrosion is? I'm not an expert, but since rust is a lot weaker than normal iron, then would knocking potential areas sound dull in comparison?

If you're just thinking of a Marina as you can't find a Lada, I would be waiting for a Lada to turn up, as the last thing you want is to "make do" with a car then realise its not what you wanted, still want the Lada, and be stuck with the Marina. Heck, you could have my Lada 2101 for £2000, but it would need towing as the brakes are rubbish and the new Weber carb needs setting up. I genuinely have come to love both, with my love still yearning for a 2101, but practically speaking it will be so hard to find one. And actually that doesn't bother me; I still think the Marina would be really interesting! Anyway, as for Darkspeed, what I don't get is how you know that the sills have been filled and / or painted to hide rust. It isn't a rust free car; there are spots of rust everywhere on it, but a wire scraper and some rust removing agent, with something to stop it from rusting further is all it should need. Surely, once that has been completed, the car will be 'solid' and for my genuinely limited purpose (of keeping on the drive for over a month and very occasional use on weekends)? I should think that the engine won't simply stop working - not if that oil leak reported on the MOT has anything nasty to hide. Regardless, the comments on the handling are still, for me, worth a classic car. Ok, i may have been in a position to be able to fix them, ( time/money/experience etc etc) but everyone has to start somewhere. And I won't have any money if I get this car, nor experience. But I'll have two months to mess about in! Still so on the fence. I'm just so worried that I will not make the right decision. I just don't want to look back and think "you absolute fool; you should have known! Look at me now: no money left at all and no car!"

Wow that's pretty damning! What do you mean about the underseal tidemark? (Sorry for being a noob! ). Why are vinyl roofs so bad? (again, forgive my lack of knowledge!!) And finally what do you mean by Gutless? As for the paint remark, you are right but surely that applies to most classic cars anyway? One must hope that the paint is legitimate and not there to cover up anything. Surely someone would have had to pay quite some money to paint the car up if it is rotting just to sell it on? Damning? - That's opinions for you - In my view just a realistic observation to provide a little balance. MOT check being only one year could say that it's been off the road a long time and just been put back on the road to sell on. I don't disagree with you for saying your opinion; it's just I don't understand the terminology you used. (Sorry!) Yeah it does seem a tad off. And that oil leak ... heh ... well I won't really have any money leftover to buy spare parts.

Someone a few doors down from me has two coupes been covered up for a few years, I think getting in touch with the owners club is your best bet, my advice is don't buy with your heart and look at few before you commit your self rust is your biggest problem bl build quality wasn't great at that time, nice cars tho I bet there's only a few hundred left
I'm not totally sure who to contact. I don't want to contact someone really important in the club (such as the president) to just ask "oh yeah, is this Marina rust free?". I'm sure they got much better things to do

1- You are the only person who will know that once you made a few calls 2- There is no roughly required - 1800 road tax fund is £235 - if they continue to roll the Historic then it may become free in a few years. 3- Depends what you mean by break - there is every chance it will not start for many reasons. 4- See 1. The link is probably the worse Marina option of all in my personal opinion - Vinyl roof/Colour/Doors/Engine/Interior - The underseal tidemark - There is every chance of depreciation as it has zero desirability - unless prior referenced Amazon TV donor status - no-one but previous owners know whats lurking under the paintwork. They are gutless, even in 1800 form - Thirsty, especially in 1800 form the handle appallingly due to compromised cost cutting suspension. And unlike a decent wine ( not the gearbox) it will not have improved with age. I had a couple of 1300's - because they were throw away £50 cars at the time - well one was £50, the other one was free because the engine had a hole in the block. Someone from the Marina owners Club asked to buy it from me and they did not have to ask twice. www.morrismarina.org.uk/buyers-guide-what-to-look-out-for/My advice - if that's what you want then go for it - but take someone along who knows about cars when you go to look at anything and do not ignore their advice. Do a an MOT history check to see mileage its done over the past years and what fails and advisories it's had. - I did one for a car for sale on here recently which made for interesting reading. www.gov.uk/check-mot-historyWow that's pretty damning!
