In my experience, tyres that are too narrow for the rims to which they are fitted interfere with the front/rear brake bias. Many years ago I was a taxi driver and I drove a 1986 2.0d Nissan Bluebird which I thrashed to near-death every day. One weekend my boss replaced all four tyres with new ones which were noticeably narrower, after this I noticed that, under heavy braking, the rears would lock up way before the fronts had reached their limit. I'll never forget the time when a bloke stepped into the road in front of me without looking one wet morning, luckily he saw me and dived out of the way but the look on his face as he watched me slide gracefully past, COMPLETELY SIDEWAYS, on a very busy city street, was priceless.

This is the kind of build-thread I like, can't wait to see this when it's done. Adaptorman, you're obviously very talented. (and a bit mental).

I can't say that I like these cars but that is a great find, I didn't even know there was a 'sporty' Allegro until now. Does anyone know any facts and figures? (bhp, 0-60 etc).

Very nice! I haven't seen one of those for a long time. They must be quite rare by now, my nieghbour had one in about 1986 and it was the rustiest vehicle I had ever seen, yours has obviously been looked after and it's a credit to it's former owner(s).

Your work rate is astounding. Seconded. Is this going to be your sons car? if so he is going to be the envy of all his friends.

I've been watching this thread from the beginning (almost), I don't know why cos I've never been interested in building-work yet I keep coming back to see how it's going, can't wait to see the finished product.
Best wishes to you and your project.

The blue 3.0 Mk II looks great with those wheels, if it were mine I'd be tempted to lose the chrome strip on the side and the perspex sunroof deflector (or whatever they're called).
The Mk III is awesome too.
I once 'borrowed' my Uncles 2.8i when he was on holiday, I've wanted one ever since.

Noooooooo....... Life can be such a curse word at times. Glad to hear it was insured but as some have already said, I'm sure you would rather have the car. Anyway, I hope you can salvage the engine and 'box (and whatever else) from the cortina and find another vehicle to put the ;D ;D ;D back on your face. best wishes.

Please excuse me for being pedantic but when were engine hoists renamed as 'cranes'? Probably something to do with joining the EU, bloody Tony Blair. My Grandad fought a war for our right to call an engine hoist (or crane) whatever we bloody well want to call it.

I used to have a 1.0 Fiat Uno with a whole 45bhp, great fun to drive and about the cheapest form of motoring this side of a Honda C50, I think the tyres were 145's, I used to put about 50psi in them which made it very 'interesting' to drive in the wet. I once saw an indicated 115mph on the M4! The speedo was obviously built by Italians.

I keep thinking that even 2 CVH's aren't really gunna provide much more than 250bhp....... I've heard people claim 200bhp or more from a (highly) tuned N/A CVH, then there's the turbo option.

Looks like a reasonable commuter bike. Nice one.
It looks like a Honda CG125 replica, named after a Yamaha and a Kawasaki. It seems irony is alive and well in China.

Motocross bikes are all singles and I don't know of any that have a cush-drive.

On a similar note, I vaguely remember seeing a 'customised' Allegro in a magazine when I was about six, (1979). It was owned by none other than Dave Lee Travis.

I've had many spectacular failures with 2-stroke motorcycles; holed pistons, snapped con-rods etc. Too many 'racing starts' on my old RD125LC made the clutch-basket break up, which in turn made the gearbox stick in first, I had to ride 15 miles in first gear to get home.
I once had a Mk 1 Astra GTE which spat a big end bearing cap through the side of the block.
