Correct - called in after getting it (still can't quite call the car her, yet) washed over the road, and needed some interior disinfectant wipes as it does smell a little 'doggy'. You really don't want to see the amount of crud i wiped off just the steering wheel.... I work over in Eastwood, so Asda was nearest (and Morrisons didn't have any wipes..!)

So here we are then; picked up the Z3 yesterday, had it washed and delinted the roof today (it was mucky and seems to have had a white cat sleeping on the roof; covered in fur!). So far - drives very nice - I've always been dead against having an auto, but i thought i would give it a go and see what it was like; quite nice apparently! Comfy and wafty; power steering seems to be a bit 'over-assisting' but I'll learn to live with it. It does have a few battle scars - particularly the bonnet is covered with stone chips and bad touch ups, so I'll need to attend to that (if anyone has any tips short of a complete repaint please share). Thankfully, it didn't cost me any more than i sold my Midget for (nearly two years ago) so although the insurance was somewhat more expensive, I'm not overly out of pocket (2.8's seem to carry a premium over the 1.9/20/2.2 versions, though I'm not sure why? Yes it drives well but not £1.5-2k nicer...!). Suffice to say should i need to sell, i don't think i will lose out. Anyway, pics...

Just as an aside; had a look at a very shonky 2.0 last weekend. Has been at the dealership for at least 8 months and not sold which seemed odd given we have had a heatwave in that time. Turned up to find moss around the door handles, rust on the speaker grilles, front indicator hanging off and generally rough looking car. Suffice to say i walked away given he was asking £1500 for it (the salesman even told me it was a project car before i even got to it; no there's an omen if ever there was one..!)
Off to look at a 2.8 Auto shortly (when he texts me to let me know he's on his way home).
Fingers crossed this is in better nick than the last two....

To me, and to many a Barryboy wagon, that would be a 'Crashed through Halfords'; suggesting they attached everything in sight without so much as a consideration as to if they should have...

Quick question jpr1977 - the silver knob on the right of the steering wheel - is that for the lights? I saw it in the one I test drove and I thought it was some sort of aftermarket phone magnet, but seems to be present in all of them...?

I could understand it if the car had a higher mileage, and the interior wear would have been commensurate with say, 120k+, but despite the MOT history showing the mileage to be genuine it still felt a bit too worn.
Whilst I have no doubt i could have remedied the paint for £3-400 at a bodyshop, the rear window myself, possibly sort the drivers door issue and the door card, its all things that i would prefer were OK to begin with - I'm not asking for a minter, but one without sweat marks or requiring a respray would be a nice place to start.
The irony is I've opted for a slightly newer car (i.e. newer than a 45 year old Midget) so as to need to do less to it, since having a 10 month old daughter sees most of my time taken with her (which, I might add, I'm quite happy about!). So to buy a car needing plenty to do before i start feels like a waste of time; I'm happy buying a rough but ready car, but preferably with uniform wear and tear.
I'll likely give the 1.9 a go to see if they are as bad as the interweb seems to make out, and possibly try a 2.8 if i can find one for sale in budget. Failing that, I might look further afield for something else entirely - we shall see.
There is a 2.0 six not far from me, and it also happens to be £700 cheaper than the above, so it might be worth a go for comparisons sake....

Well, I went to see the car yesterday. First impressions - the seller seemed honest enough, nice bloke, straight to point out any faults with the car before I started to look round (which was fair) and have a good conversation with him for a while prior to even getting in the car. The car itself presented as an honest vehicle; bodywork was mint (bar one part - to come later), the engine was so clean you could eat your lunch off it, and it ran smoothly enough. Faults listed by the seller were; - Drivers window didn't stop going up when it reached the top - Rear nearside quarter panel was very scratched and rough to the touch; suspect a poor respray as the colour didn't match. - Rear window needed replacing (as is often the cased on Z3's of this age). Cheap and easy enough to do. I had a quick check underneath the rear - these cars are known to pop the spot welds to the boot floor on the bigger engines, requiring either a new boot floor or extensive re-welding, however this was sound. The seller was happy for me to take it for a test drive on my own (unusual, but fine with me) and off I went. Having read a few opinions that it feels like driving a saloon not a convertible, I thought it was an odd observation, however I now know what they mean. Given it is such a small car with a relatively large engine, it felt remarkably heavy and, despite an alleged 170ish bhp, it didn't feel anywhere like that. Perhaps I was used to my Megane 225 (and expected it to feel a bit quicker), but it still felt under powered (which, in a car so small, felt very strange). Also on the test drive, there did seem to be something of a an alarming clunk every time I changed up; the only way to avoid this was to be very, very gentle when bringing up the clutch, which was quite alarming..! the interior seemed well worn. Not worn out, but having bought cars with similar mileage (and despite the car was 17 years old) it felt like the car had done at least twice the mileage on the clock; the gear knob was worn out, most off the switches & buttons had no paint left on them, the drivers door card had turned green with sweat....lots of things that although could be fixable, all needed doing. So, the car felt good - engine noise was nice from the straight six, and had it been a bit less worn I might have considered it. However, due to the work needed (paint, window, rear window replacement, various switches & knob needing swapping, interior work including seats and door cards) I've decided to keep looking. Had this price been lower I might have considered it as a project, but the seller was asking over £2.2k for it (and from the original conversation i doubt he would take what I might offer him for it) so its a no from me. Pics from the ad;

Yes, I know its another one of those threads, but I felt i should ask the question as there does seem to be a distinct lack of these on RR. The BMW Z3. First debuted in 1996 ( I think, correct me if I'm wrong), in production until 2003. Equivalent MGF's, MX5's and the SLK's seem to populate the forum, and given the price of these things I'm surprised there are not more on here. Obviously there's this one, which has admittedly inspired me to take the plunge. And also this bargain (although not my cup of tea, I can see the potential). I'm just testing the waters - having had an MG Midget which was firmly in Retro territory, I'm interested in opinions.... (Pics to follow as my work PC appears to be blocking my ability to upload...)

Bit silly this one I guess - I signed up for an email address when i was 16 and first started working in IT.
I was a fan of both Max Power and Metallica at the time, and there was a track on Reload call 'Fixxer'.
Cue one teenager thinking it would be clever to have triple X in the middle of his email address (long time Vin Diesel starred in XXX) and I mated the two to make Maxxxer.
It's stuck ever since, so if you find a Maxxxer on other forums, its probably me (mainly car related, although someone beat me to it on eBay...).
It does cause some issues though - it gets flagged up as a possible rude link so i can no longer sign up to some sites (specifically thinking of Scimitarweb here) so i have to be creative with the username now; Ma3xer or suchlike...

Had one of these myself a few years back; great cars and I was (very) sad to see her go. John at MCS has been fixing & servicing these for years (although I took mine to Motormech at Birmingham as it was nearer) and you're right - the cambelt thing is a myth! Get yourself over to www.FCCUK.org/forum - it is (used to be) a very good source for all things Coupe. And if GrahamL is still on there, get youself a GTec chip - essentially a CMOS chip which ups the power and removes the rev limiter on 1st and second gear, for about £50 (fit it yourself; dead easy!) As regards the indicators - you get used to driving with one finger out to turn them off. And the Brembos- yes they are awful considering they are meant to be uprated, however they do work if you need them to from speed (but the do feel shockingly poor; even my girlfriends 1-litre Yaris had better brakes..! And if you have the budget, you can easily achieve 300bhp with a chip, FMIC, exhaust, induction and a bolt on uprated turbo (many many people did this) and I beleive there were a number o 400bhp dailies running around too. and then there was Mavric and JohnS with their 600bhp Coupes (yes I sepnt many hours on there prior to selling up and migrating to RR...!). Enjoy - bookmarked this and I'm now tempted to get back into another one.....

Been here ever since despite selling the Midget 18 months ago. Still not replaced the Midget though When I started the forum in 2004 I had a Mk3 Golf, don't need to own a retro car to be interested Agreed-still very much interested, and hope to be replacing the Midget (fairly) soon 👍🏻

Waaaay back in 2008 my then Girlfriend (now Wife) started working with an old mate ( LowStandards ) after I worked with him years previously; got talking again and he pointed me in the direction of RR. I lurked for years (as I had a modern (ish) Fiat Coupe at the time), then when that got sold (and I got sick of dailying a Focus) I bought my Midget off here in 2012. Then started attending the Gathering in 2013 with LowStandards and Mr S . Been here ever since despite selling the Midget 18 months ago. Still not replaced the Midget though

The only way I found to get round this chump (everything listed as Location U k, or u K, or suchlike, selling for his uncle with a different email address each time) is to set your search criteria higher than the average most of the listings are set at.
Nearly all of them start at £100; I got sick of seeing them (and reporting them since eBay either can't or won't get rid of him/her)so i just set it to look for classics above £200.
Granted some creep up into my search as some people actually bid on them, but they are few and far between now...
