Purusing the 28daylater site, i came across this. www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=60507not only are there old Austins and the usual waste there but also pretty much modern Mercs etc All the vehicles apparently have the keys and paperwork inside too Sush a waste

The Mercs are all either newish fleet cars awaiting repair or brand new cars waiting to go to the dealer. There is a huge amount of cars from the scrappage sheme there, but equally as many cars still owned/used but just in a state of temporary storage. The turnover of the modern cars is HUGE! As for the scrappage cars, it looks like they are just awaiting their turn. Some more pics of the 'retros' rather than the moderns...

Makes me think of a local car dealership which advertise on the local radio. Ad goes something like this... "Remember the scrappage scheme? (in the background audience shout 'yey' and applaud). Remember when it ended? (audience start booing). Well..... we're bringing it back! (cue audience cheering and clapping again). Makes me change channel every time.

So what happens to the environment when they all catch fire? Looks like a huge risk to me, that many car's parked so close together. Also makes me sad that they cant be re-used/exported.

this is why the scheme was so stupid imho, a lot of those cars look fine, and not that old (the skoda seat and polo in the first pic) ok it had its reason, but such a wasteful way to do it, shows the throwaway society we live in (don't want this to turn into another tread on that though....) the mercs are obviously there for some other reason, hence why there parked properly rather then jammed together, guess the airfield is rented out for a few different things The minis makes me sad been looking for a reasonably priced one for ages for a project, guess they weren't worth the £2000 that people got for trading them in though, so :/ does look like a fire hazard tho, just needs someone to set oen on fire and the whole lot would go up :/

Yeah, in the 28dayslater thread it says the Mercs are dealer stock.
You have to check this out, since scrappage it seems that any compound with cars in is automatically described as full of scrappage cars. Since I was a kid airfields have been full of cars for various reasons. Scrappage is/was only one of them for a while and I assume all the scrappage stuff has been, well, scrapped now?

Just go to your local NCP or rail station carpark. Closer and probably less security.

It goes to show you, eh?
1. You hand over several £10,000 for a new Merc, and unknown to you it's been lying unprotected from the elements in some flipping airfield for months.
2. Scrappage. I get the idea, but in all this "new cars pollute less than old cars" sales-pitch, they forget to mention that the energy used in manufacturing a new car is huge. Years ago I remember it being quoted as 40% of the energy consumed in a car's lifetime. That's before it even leaves the factory gates. How much energy does it take us enthusiasts to restore a car? Much less I imagine. How about a tax-break for us recyclists, Mr Chancellor? Car breakers yards were around long before 'Green' became politics. So a new car pollutes less, I accept that. But nobody seems to have produced figures of HOW MUCH less. If that information was available we could tell if the energy consumption of all those car factories is the lesser of 2 evils.
So, apologies, I'm ranting and away for a lie down.
But it is a shame to see cars that many of us could make something of lying abandoned with so much useable life left in them.

In August 1986 my brother bought a new Fiat X1/-9 1500 from a Fiat dealer, selling his early 1985 B plate one privately. On examination, the 1986 D registered car was an earlier chassis number by approx 90 units. He got a full refund.
