I fancied something with independent suspension and an overhead camshaft. And RWD for some winter fun... Its a bit doggy here and there, but nothing major. To those interested by a bit of useless trivia, I found out that the BMW factory code for this car is E10, which is the same as the factory code as my two Datsuns. I chuckled slightly when I heard this, but I guess you had to be there....ahem... and got this oddity too. Being an elderly Lancia I'm going to have to be careful regarding any winter shenanigans. Its a got a bit of rot around the lower panels but drives superbly. First things first, some nice VW wheels for the BMW...then maybe a MOT....

Not one new car, but two? Both top cars...they look like they're gonna swallow some cash though! I'm not sure if I'm jealous or not...actually I don't think I am.

I know I know! To be honest I am just going to use the BMW to thrash around in, and I'll move on when I fancy something else. The Lancia does represent a problem, but the car would have been scrapped otherwise - its far too good condition for that. Lancia UK tried to buy and crush many Beta saloons in 1980 due to some negative tabloid reports, but their reputation had already been damaged, hence their gradual demise in the UK . This one got away though! They were made from curse word poor russian steel, but vitually every other car from the same era rusted just as bad. If the FIAT group sold the new Fulvia in the UK, then maybe all perceptions of what Lanica used to stand for will disappear.... I think its beautiful, the ultimate new retro car?

I might be jealous though. The BMW is one rare motor these days, being a touring and not a saloon, and with round taillights, and the Lancia's in very good condition, and is getting rare now too. Strange, I like themboth and I'm not even into Lancias or BMWs.

Cheers guys! I'm not particularly a BMW or Lancia fanatic neither, but like you guys share the same passion for the unusual. This is my first BMW I've owned, i've had a few German cars - a couple of VW 1302S/1600 GT and a MK1 Golf but first venture into the Motor Werks. I have a soft spot for the first two incarnations of the 3 series too.....actually I could go on about my likes.... ...being a touring and not a saloon, and with round taillights.... Thats what I love too. They look like my 120A coupes....

It wasn't that the russian steel was made badly, it was that Bresnev and co (who were corrupt lying beaurocrats who gave socialism a bad name) sold Lancia second hand steel (yes really) that was recycled into sheets to be re-pressed, yet most Lancia people were under the impression it was new steel. Russian steel, used right, can be very tough, and only a little susceptible to rust. Look at a Lada Niva, or UAZ 469, both very well made.

02 Tourings? Great! You should see the ratty ones that take part in the Pomeroy Trophy, organised by the VSCC every year... Teriffic, and scruffy too!
