Tell me about 74 trabant 601s

Hi I have just got a trabant of here needing some engine work.

I am on the look out for any info, web sites, parts and supplies in the uk

also any other wheels fit it and what can be done to tune them

any help will be good thanks

As far as getting parts for a Trabi I strongly recommend www.ldm-tuning.de/en/
You should find all the parts you need to bring it back to life, I have ordered parts from them and they where very quick. They even do an adapter to fit a 1000cc triple from a Wartburg. There is a lot of tuning kit to chose from and Trabants can be made to go
Very well indeed.
They are good fun to drive and handle well,just remember to use your fingertips on
The dash mounted gear stick and not grab it or you will struggle to get in to gear smoothly.
If you need any advice just ask, I'm no expert but I do have some experience with them.

I have striped the engine today. the top end is all ok. but the bottom end is bad. there is also a pice off metal that has snaped were the fly wheel bolts on. on the crank. so it looks like I need to find a good bottom end or a new engine.

edit i have just got the crank out. it all needs taking apart and cleaning. how do i get the con rods out ? also the part that is broke is behind the fly wheel and is held on with 2 screws

74 of them sounds like a whole lot of bother to me, where will you keep them? or are you planning some sort of henge, or prehaps a wall for keeping the neighbours at bay.

er ? its a 1974 model trabant. not 74 off them lol it would be cool tho as I would have some spear parts

I think that the con rods are held in by pressed in pins. If you look on LDM,s web site
They have a diagram of the crank and con rods.

Join the IFA club. They'll help.
Plenty of cheap spare engines around out there- last time I needed one (admittedly 10 years ago) £30 -known good.

Around the fall of the wall, Trabis got the 1L 4-stroke engine from VW. It's probably going to be a lot more rewarding and easier to find parts for a dub block than the old two-strokes.

Always fancied a Kombi myself, never been in the right situation though.

I'm sure I heard that it was before the fall which would be interesting politically. I've seen A Trabi with a VW engine branded IFA on the rocker cover. That model had a taller bonnet line.
