Okay following on from the motorway cruisers thread a while ago,.. it still looks like in a few months I'll be tonking up and down the motorway to work each day.
I'm thinking I want the most comfortable car known to man. It has to be quiet AND comfortable. And luxurious. .... and cheap.
I've noticed old Jags (XJ6, XJS) tend to be inexpensive. I'm thinking that the engines will be a touch thirsty for every day use, so I'd probably head down the LPG route.
Any other ideas? Preferably sub 2k,..

Big Mercs all the way! A nice W126 S-class if you don't want to go too old. That was really the last over-engineered Mercedes. After that the bean counters started building them and look what curse word they churn out now!

What's your view on the Volvo thing? Might be just the job as a winter motorway cruiser.
A nice big wedge shaped estate will go nice and quick (especially if turbo'd) and be very comfy too. My dad bought one for £400 to use as a delivery hack for the battery and spares guys he works for, so they're cheap too. That said he does like to drive it at 50 everywhere and has a fear of using the indicators......

Nissan 300C. Get a saloon and you get a/c and auto..comfy seats and a super soft ride plus a lovely lazy injected 3.0L V6. At a steady 70-80mph they can do 35mpg too. 300C's also come as an estate. Estates are all manuals and saloons are all auto. Or how about an old 300ZX? The older non-turbo Z31 models are pretty cheap and £500 should get you a reasonable roadworthy one. Finally, my everyday transport (Bluebird Turbo) is top notch on a motorway. They are quiet and fast and have electronically adjustable shock so on the motorway you can flick them onto soft and waft along. Get an Executive and you get heated leather seats and a/c too. Again £500 should get a decent one... although they the executives are getting hard to find now.

Bluebird executive sounds nice ,.. Volvo is also very tempting,.. possibly even an estate (!!) Big Mercs are always tempting, but servicing bills scare me a bit. Seeing as it would be my daily driver garages would be fixing it.

I don't think you could go far wrong with a Volvo. They're tough old buggers and you get a decent level of comfort for not too much money. Dunno about servicing costs though.
How about an old Toyota CROWN? Usually cheap to but but I guess the economy might not be to great on the 2.8's. Probably be dead reliable though.
Worst thing about the Bluebird Executive would be finding one in the first place as they are pretty scarece. Servicing is reasonable as everything mechanical is the same as all the other Bluebirds except the rear brakes and engine. The engine is the same as a Silvia Turbo but you can also get a non-turbo 2.0i version too. That has the same motor as late Prairies. Providing you avoid Nissan, parts are reasonable.

The answer is still the Volvo 760 saloon, or a 740, which is cheaper but just as comfy, and better looking,(different wings/bonnet, the 760 had the same front end as the later 940/960.) Go for a saloon, it's better looking, is not much less practical, and has less old man image. I won't preach again about why you should have a Volvo, look it up in an earlier thread because I'm getting repetitive strain injuries typing it on here so often! ;D
And less of the stereotyping! ;D I love old Volvos yet I'm a skinny, dirty looking psycho Imp driver too! ;D

I'd love to find someone with a V 780c Turbo to import, I'd snap their fingers off
I know I'll be slated for this oddball option but you can pick up low milage 480 Turbos for a grand now (2 tone leather, e/w, e/m, PAS, ABS, alloys) and actually make it into an very interesting drive by visiting superchips.co.uk Real sleeper

Yank Tank.....the most luxurious!!
Ya can get a MOT'd one for less than 2k....and a smaller cc V8 would return fair MPG's too especially on a run.
Sommat different.

If you really want sommat different what about this beast... A Volga M21, some of these had Perkins Diesels put in them, and I suppose you could always put a modern turbodiesel from a BMW or something (so that it's set up for rear wheel drive) to get a blend of power and economy. Or a V8 if you fancy a laugh! ;D And there was even a station wagon model! Although where to find one of those in the West is beyond me! ;D

I used to have a '73 Olds Omega coupe with a 350 in it. That wasn't very economical (15 - 18 mpg most of the time) but it was a cool ride for long distances. It was pretty pathetic that it could only just manage a ton though! I paid £750 for it as a one owner from new car and still kind of wish I never sold it although I did double my money ;D I wonder what happened to it and if it's still about?

I love the CX - I'm sure there are still a few around! What about a Mk1 Senator or Carlton? As far as I know they are pretty cheap! Alfa 164 V6? Cost peanuts and they don't seem to rust. I like the idea of a Volvo 240 with a V6 dropped in it from a 760! That'd be fun! Or for a completely odd-ball suggestion, how about a Subaru SVX?! I reckon it's a modern classic! Looks like something from Judge Dredd!!

The alfa 164 is lovely, but a Volvo does everyting better besides speed and image (and even then a V6 Volvo does the speed as well. The SVX might be nice, with that flat 6, but it's a bit modern really, isn't it?

Yeah the SVX is a bit new - I have a soft spot for them cos they're so unloved - I think it's really quirky and definitely a future classic. Nobody'd know what the hell it is!! Same with the Nissan Maxima - fully loaded, unbreakable and ultimately reliable but no-one bought them (OK they're about as exciting as a Tescos carrier bag but still...). Give it 15 years or so and I reckon I'll be on the lookout for one! I've recently convinced my dad to go back to Volvo's - he had a 760 with the V6 which was really nice and fast! Now has a more sedate 940 but still can't beat the ride!

Actually Maxima's do have a problem and it's with the gearbox. They tend to pack in and it''s VERY common on them. You'll often see them for sale cheap with faulty autoboxes. They are all auto by the way so there's no way round it It's possible a QX 'box willl fit but I'm not sure if they are auto too.
