Ive been pondering a new mess around project for a while now... I'm in a position to share a unit with guy i know thru work, And I'm very very tempted by the 80's vans that seem to be on the streets of japan.... Much like this.... Now idealy it would have to be diesel, But petrol a possibility depending on the size and how cool the van is ;D Anyone able to reel off some names? I can only seem to think of the usual toyota hiace, and nissan Urvan... And possibly some convince the misses pics? ;D

You may find that having a diesel in any of the older Japanese vans isn't much of a benefit as they're generally quite old designs and thus not terribly economical, especiaaly given the price difference between diesel and petrol. I'd take a Caravan with a VG30E 3.0l V6 over the wheezy LD20 of TD27 diesels any day.

In really REALLY liking some of these!! How feasible would it be to import one?? As feasble as any other j-car import. In case you didn't see my thread from yesterday, this website makes browsing Yahoo Japan Auctions a lot easier than Rinkya. www.importmonster.com.au/yahooNot sure how helpful they'll be for shipping though.

Why is this not done more over here, with Transits etc? Availability of custom parts was basically nil, plus the 'van' scene has never really been vastly popular in the UK. It was really the 60's and 70's that saw a lot of custom vans. Street Machine ran a couple of features back in the 80s or 90s pushing people into customising vans, and advised on lowering, what wheel availability was like etc, but it never really went anywhere.

And I found this L300, really like the look of it My unit mate reanimation used to own that. Believe me, that photo flatters it massively. That was taken in the short period he kept it at his flat, and before the lower panels had really deteriorated. It went pretty well for a 1600 (with a column change for a flat floor!) but that suspension chop (really a hack job) made it virtually undriveable on anything resembling a road. I realise that matters not here, but it would matter to me. It was originally beige and the black paint had been applied with a trowel and a garden sprayer. For that extra Custom Car vibe it had purple \ brown fur applied liberally over the dashboard. Rean later sold it because he was running out of space. After being epically intoxicated around by a pair of scammers from Essex a Mitsubishi fanatic from Oxford bought it online (for an obscene sum of money) and collected it on a Canter beavertail. They're worth a great deal to exporters and our man saved it from this fate. A good job really, I wanted my space in the unit back.
