been re-building a 1987 1.6 205 gti. The work is being done in the back garden and obviously the work required alot of cutting, grinding and welding etc. So I can agree this work isn't exactly silent, but I did make a point of starting work at 11:00 and finishing at 16:00 just out of respect really to the neighbours. However we have received a letter from the council explaining a noise complaint has been made to your address for DIY related activity. I am just curious if anyone on here have been in a similar situation, whilst repairing there retro. Rant over ;D Have a cool picture for the boring post!!!

I have had noise complaints, but not for welding, grinding etc. All I did was phoned the council and explained the situation and what hours the noise was happening, I even suggested putting a sheet through all my neighbours doors so they could record the hours the so called nuisance was happening, I would also write down the times I heard the noises (chickens). The council said I didn't have to go that far, and we sat and talked about it on the phone and made a few suggestion, listened to a few and I have heard nothing back since, still got all the chickens Cheers, Stu.

I believe that during 'normal' hours then there is no enforcable niose restrictions.
I may be wrong tho.

I suspect the council may have just been going through the motions to passify the person who made the complaint. I don't see how there's much they can do about it during normal daytime hours especially if your neighbour(s) made no attempt to speak to you about it first.

Simply write back to the Council and ask them to provide you with a copy or details of the specific Legislation or Bye Law including Part and Provision you have been accused of breaking, and relevant restrictions on Noise Pollution.
Then compare the restrictions to your actions and advise the Council accordingly that you are/will complying.

I suspect the council may have just been going through the motions to passify the person who made the complaint. I concur. It doesn't sound like you're doing anything they can take enforceable action against so don't sweat it. My special lady friend's Gran got a letter about her feeding pigeons. One of the neighbours thought it would attract rats and complained. I went into full on, clenched fist, angry letter writing mode and got a "calm down, dear" letter back from them. They say it's a standard response to a complaint and it would take a number of further complaints and loads of investigation before they go ahead with any enforcement action.

Alwyas a good idea to go out of your way to get up the council's nose at the earliest opportunity, chucking a bit of pseudo-legal waffle at them will always get them on side. I would give em a call and explain what you're up to, including what measures you've taken (hours worked etc), point out that no-one's complained to you and youre keeping yourself to yourself. I'm sure the council have got plenty of rowdy neighbours, barking dogs etc which are much more of a problem than you, if you're reasonable i think there'll be no problem.

Different Councils have different Bye Laws regarding Noise Pollusion, so asking them to clarify which one they think you are breaking is hardly 'getting up their nose', it's common sense. The harsh reality is they'll probably respond with "Oh, no Laws are being broken, just letting you know we've had a complaint". Yes, I can see how that would annoy them... *facepalm*
