It's a Cuore (specifically an L700 series) It's an L701, coz it's an export Daihatsu Cuore, not a JDM Daihatsu Mira. It was put together especially for the show by Area 52. I had a blast piloting it up the hillclimb, but the engine is very tired and it's being broken for parts and the shell scrapped.

Dan was about to scrap the poor thing due to the 'Living a hard life in London' bodywork and a very worn engine. Instead of just sending it off to the scrap man it seemed a good idea to give it a nice send off by means of an Area 52 'group build' make-over. Initially it was going to be a camber car (we got just over 40 degrees of camber and the driveshafts/CV's and steering still worked) which was going well until it was decided to make it something more appropriate to a hill climb. This is how it looked at the early stages of the camber car transformation. We got a good 10 degrees more than that after these shots were taken: Seeing as the Gathering was going to be at a hill climb this year we decided to change direction and build it as a little track car. It was built over three weekends (actually about two and a half) from its standard form into the little pocket rocket...including custom headlights, custom mini-cage/bracing/harness mounts, big suspension drop, a complete respray, competely stripped and prepped for some runs up the hill before then being scrapped. You can see some pics of part of the build here: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=rrgs&action=display&thread=75682&page=165I've been too busy since the Gathering to do anything with it, but next week I'm heading down to the unit to pull lots of bits off it then it's being a-framed to the weigh bridge. It's a real shame, but it was a fun build and it had its day of glory at the Gathering which is more than would have happened if it had gone straight to the scrap man initially. If you're interested in any of the parts from the car please let Dan (VIP) know - all the cool stuff will be coming off the car.

Drop tasty new engine in it?

Drop tasty new engine in it? There are two options, both of which are very easy, neither of which are very cheap. Firstly, simply pop a replacement three cylinder from a breaking Cuore or Perodua Kelisa [same car, badge engineered/facelifted]. However, due to both cars reasonable obscurity in the UK, breakers tend to be few and far between, and engines tend to be £300plus. Given these have a tendancy to eat piston rings around the 80k mark, and most breakers have around 60-70k on them, it doesn't really make sense financially. A rebore and oversize pistons are an option [67mm ones from Toyota], but these are equally expensive. Further researched showed that the 1300 4-pot K3-VE engine from a Sirion would drop straight in, with the use of the Sirion subframe [The Sirion used the 3-pot and the K3-VE, hence ease of compatibility], together with the Sirion ECU, and would give you a massive increase in power from 60BHP to 95BHP. Again, relative obscurity of the 1.3 Sirion means either buying a complete Sirion and stripping it [£700 minimum] or waiting to find a breaker. There's also a turbocharged version of the four pot, the K3-VET, which came in the YRV Turbo, which would effectively give you 200BHP/tonne, but these are even thinner on the ground than the Cuore or the Sirion.

Getting parts from Malaysia would work out just as expensive as buying them from the UK by the time shipping etc is factored in. I've already bought a lot of parts for this car from Malay during its life [suspension, exhaust, cold air intake, lamps].

Hey Dez,
It's looking like I won't have time to do anything on the car until next weekend (play weekend) so between Dan & I we can make sure the alternator is saved for you. He did text me the other day to let me know about saving it for you....but as said, I haven't even had time to get over to the unit recently, let alone do anything down there.
It's going to be a shame to see the car go to the scrappy, but it would have been there long ago and wouldn't have been a fun project or cool hill climb car as a final curtain call. ;D
Will call you after the weekend.

hey fellas, we've messed around with a few of these on our show Mighty Car Mods.. a few vids can be found here... Anyway i just bought another two, transplanted a whole bunch of good panels onto the best shell and put some 14" wheels and 185/60/14 rims on it, no crazy camber .. YET! although i'd love to do the back end saw you guys mentioned getting some from malaysia, was hoping you could point me in the direction of where to start looking and how i'd go about getting the parts sent to Aus. the car in the first post looks unreal! hoping to get mine to that level... (And if you're selling parts, i'll take the blacked out headlights

(And if you're selling parts, i'll take the blacked out headlights Hey Smidge, I saw your show Mighty Car Mods, and watched the auction on eBay. If you get hold of a 1.3 Sirion or YRV, it's a very good way of getting BIG power gains over the 989cc 3-pot. The best places for getting advice on the L701 is on the K2 Owners Club forum. Yeah, it's for the Perodua Kelisa, but it's the same car. There's a tuning company called Speedworks in Malaysia that helped with all the parts, including shipping to the UK. e-mail Toh - tsh@speedworks.com.my
