using citric acid to remove rust

hey

i bought a kg of citric acid powder to mix with water to make citric acid to put bolts etc from my moped in and remove rust, its the stuff you get off ebay that they do wine makin with and all.

not sure on quantities? i just want to make a small amount that i can put bolts and stuff into.

i saw another guy use it with good results but he made a wheelie bin full and put his moped frame and everything in it haha i just need to make small amounts.

so, how much citric powder to water?

I have no idea, but I did use White Wine Vinegar (it was in the cupboard and no-one here uses it on anything) to clean up a numberplate light, some ARB brackets and a load of old bolts. Came out a treat. Though one of the brackets was more rusty than anticipated and when scraping some melted rubber bush off, I put a hole in it.

It will work on surface rust. Vinegar etc is pretty effective, but a bit disappointing.
I used the battery charger method. Put a teaspoon of bicarb of soda in a plastic bowl, attach - to big piece of sacrificial metal which is clamped to the side of the bowl and the + to the part you are derustifying.

Within an hour you will see a trail of rust going towards the metal. It 100% removes all rust afterwards.
