I got yet another pile of toss old car coming in. The heater hoses have been removed. This is possibly because the heater core leaks or it could be because some animal removed the air conditioner without thinking the job through
I want to test the matrix to see if it leaks. Other than hooking it up and risking it curse word rusty coolant all over the carpet.
Thoughts?

cap one end and blow colourd smoke in it under pressure? old merc trick for diagnosing CL leaks ? a bike pump somehow filled with smoke would do it although i think the effort involved would be more than just mopping the puddle up lol  |

Bodge some pipes on, pump it up to 15 psi with the compressor and wait a few minutes to see if there is any air left in?

Benzboy - you fancy coming help strip and refit the dash?  Cobblers - good idea, except my airline is leaky itself at the moment (on my "to do" list) so not sure that'd work. bortaf - coloured smoke sounds magic. I think sheeting the floor down may end up being the route I take unless anyone else has a good idea... |

No mess method.
Get a push bike inner tube. Cut either side of the valve and attach to the heater stubs with jubilee clips. Inflate with hand or foot pump. Check pressure. Wait a little while and recheck pressure. If lower then the air is leaking out somewhere and the same would happen with water.

Autofive method - same as above but substitute garage air line for bicycle pump. Put 10 bar into heater matrix. Look surprised when it goes BANG. Pick up pieces of matrix, start removing dash.

As above, pressurise it a little, 5-10psi is enough, doesn't take much to make them assume interesting new shapes (Landy ones anyway - T-shirt etc...). Dunk in water, shows immediately if it leaks and exactly where from. Patched a leak on my Landy a couple of yrs ago with JB Weld, it's held up fine so far.
