as above the 1.3 in my mk2 golf might be a bit dead
my mate has a 1.6 mk2 scirocco engine and gearbox he might be selling
how much work is involved in the swap?

welding mount to LHS chassis rail to start, can't add owt else, never done it but remember that bit. i'd look for a 1.4 from a mk4 polo for ease of fitment.

the 1.6 is a tall block irc, different mounds to the short block 1.3. it could be done by welding in mounts as guz said, but i'd rather just go for a short block, a g40 would work if you wanted some more power.

No welding needed to fit a tall block into a mk2, the engine mounts to the subframe, not the chassis legs.
The engine, gearbox, ignition system, inlet and carb would all go in, but you'll need the subframe, engine and gearbox mounts, gear linkage, some coolant hoses, and the exhaust manifold/downpipe off a 1.6 or 1.8 8v mk2, and depending on the Scirocco, maybe the gearbox output flanges off an earlier Scirocco or a mk1 tall block. So it may well be easier to just source an engine from a crashed or breaking mk2, as it'll already have the right bits.
Or like they said, the other option would be to stick with the small block engines, a 1.6 8v from a 6n Polo or Skoda Felicia can be swapped in with mostly only bolt on mods, or there's the 1.4 and 1.6 16v from 6n and 6n2 Polos, which I think need a bit more fiddling, but will go in on the mounts.
