I'm not too good with this computer malarky, and today have got the computer geeks at work to set up a paypal account for me. They say there are 2 ways that I can receive money if I sell something. One is to request the money from a buyer, which means I have to have the buyers e mail to send the request OR the buyer sends me the money by me just giving them my email. I realise I have to sign in to payapl to do this. Can I ask ,which way is used most? or is easiest? Thanks Rod

I've used both ways, as i've sold stuff (on here) and on ebay.
An ebay sale usually triggers an automatic invoice system, so you'll just get sent money by the buyer.
If you were to sell something 'privately' then it gives you the option of them just seding you money with no request/invoice and also they can use the 'gift' option, which means you (the recipient) don't get stung for the fees

There will always be some fees involved, so agree with the buyer beforehand which one of you will be covering these.

Be careful with the gift option. Let's for the sake of this example assume I'm a shady SOB. I have some nice shiny wheels for sale that you want, and you pay me by paypal gift. I decide to keep your lovely gift and not send you the wheels. You can't do a thing about it, as far as paypal is concerned you gave me the money, not in exchange for goods or services. I end up with my wheels (if they even existed) and you hard earned. ;D So don't use Gift unless it is a gift.

I will admit to using gift but only to people I know.
If you don't have cleared funds or if its international you are likely to get charged a fee for a gift anyway.
I also get nervous about paypal for large amounts as its really easy for a buyer to dispute the transaction. I prefer cash on collection or bank transfer for anything over say £100.
Also never take PayPal for items to be collected, theres a scam with stolen PayPal details where they obviously don't want the stuff posted. They paypal you and then collect within the same couple of hours. IE before the real paypal account holder has reported it, got it stopped and refunded etc. Leaving you with no goods and no money.

Or there is the other one, where they pay by paypal and include a shipping address, but contact you separately (email/mobile) asking to collect the item. Then, a few weeks later claim they've not received anything. Paypal ask you for a tracking number (which you obviously can't provide, since the item was collected) and the buyer gets refunded. My mate lost £500 this way, sold a guitar on ebay, buyer collects and a few weeks later claims it was never posted. I don't mind sending money on paypal, but I wouldn't use it to receive anything more than about £100 from a single person, unless like above I knew and trusted them. All that said, it is dead handy for buying and selling stuff on forums. I've probably bought and sold many hundreds of things now, and never had a problem personally apart from one plonker on ebay claiming I sent him a broken ECU, but shock horror paypal sided in my favour on the dispute

I don't use it for anything more than £50 to be honest. selling bike parts and ebay. have been a victim of paypal scams as well, sent an item (only £6 worth so didnt bother with recorded) the guy left me positive feedback on ebay then claimed on paypal, first I heard was paypal saying there was a dispute. Luckily for me he hadnt used the "item not received" option he'd used the "unlawful use of account". after showing paypal copies of the feedback they closed the case in my favour. be aware, it is a haven for scammers if you don't know what you're doing and paypal tend to side with the buyers instead of the sellers for items not received cases. if you cant prove it was delivered to them paypal side with the buyers most of the time. they suck for that
