VW engine blocks - What fits what?

I'm looking to take the boat anchor 2.1 waterboxer out of the back of my t25, and replace it with something that can manage more than 18mpg , and is hopefully not as lame as this engine.

Anyway, I can swap in a diesel bellhousing and mount a normal inline 4 cylinder engine such as a mk2/mk3 golf 8v GTi engine(PB, 2E, AGG etc), or AAZ /1Z diesels. What else shares this bellhousing pattern? The I4s are mounted on a 45 degree angle to fit under the read deck, with a wedge shaped sump from a JX 1.6d.

I'd probably just buy the whole car to break and steal the engine out of it. Wiring isn't a problem, in fact I quite fancy a challenge. Something with OBD1/2 would be nice, I'm sick of these early injection setups with no/useless/impossible to read diagnostic setups.

I've no real preference for petrol or diesel, but I want to have 110bhp+.

I'm fancying a turbo diesel - I could run it on veg which is slightly cheaper than normal diesel, sometimes. There is also scope to wind the boost up, put a decent intercooler on and stuff.

This is all on a budget, so the donor car needs to be available for about £500

Anyone got any ideas on something a bit different or am I best off sticking with the normal 2E/AGG with petrol, or AAZ/1Z diesel?

Peugeot engines have been fitted. The 2.0HDi in my Expert van has plenty of power yet fantastic economy. Unfortunatley it won't run on veg oil as it's a common rail.

As far as I'm aware, all the 4 pots have the same gearbox fitting, upto and including the 1.8 20vt and 1.9PD lumps, although the flywheels vary in both clutch diameter and clutch operation. (But they are interchangeable.)

You might just about pick up a B5 saloon with a PD115 motor in your budget, or like you say a 1Z would be a fairly decent option with a few tweaks to get the power you're after.

I'm not sure about the box fitting on the 5 pots, but the Volvo 850 2.5td (or is it 2.4?) is a 5 pot VW motor, and you'd probably get one within your budget, ~140bhp iirc, and it'd move a van along nicely. It'd be interesting to know if they're the same pattern. Same goes for the 2.5td v6 from a b5 a4, not sure on bolt pattern, but it'd be rather nice if it fitted. If either would go, then they'd probably be a bit better on fuel, as you'd be working them less. I know my dads 2.5td T5 is a lot better on fuel than friends 1.9's ever were.

Various 1.9 diesels, could go for a factory 130bhp one and take it to about 190bhp.

I'd sack off the idea of a Flora burner though, and run a 2.0 16v ABF on carbs.

Though if 110BHP is enough you can get that from a hybrid featherweight all-alloy 1.4 16v..

Think I'm going down the old abf route, but you should stick a vr6 in dave it makes all the right noises haha
