Right i have been messing on stripping the engine ect today and really have learned an awful lot. Getting stuck in is a great way to see how things work

Now my question... it actually seems it would be viable to mate the imp transaxle to the x16xe with some bell housing mods (my mate is adament he can weld the casing) and i feel a dog box would be awesome so transaxle strength would no longer be an issue..

the only issue is the input shaft on the transaxle wont fit the corsa clutch...

so i have devised the methods it could possibley work... id like to know your thoughts or if you have any other ideas?

method 1:

have the holes in the imp fly wheel welded and re-drilled to bolt onto the x16xe, this way i could use the whole imp clutch set up and only an adaptor plate would need making. the drawbacks are the imp clutch design is 40+ years old and 100+ bhp would shaft its big time, i don't think welding flywheels is safe, i would have to cut a bit block away to make the starter motor work

(this is my least fave plan)


method 2:

Use the whole corsa fly and clutch assembley and make a hybrid bell housing from the imp transaxle and the corsa box.. this would be strong enough to take the power and would not require fannying on with starter motor. drawback is id have to either have a custom input shaft make or find some one to change the splined ring in a corsa clutch? (anyone know who can do this?)


method 3:

as above but find a clutch with the same spline pattern as the imps shaft but that will fit in the corsa housing and work (my ideal option)

Can you not just use the Imp friction plate with the Corsa flywheel and pressure plate?

When I fitted the 1.6 K series in my Skoda Rapid, I redrilled the Skoda flywheel to fit the Rover crank, and made up a spacer behind the flywheel that also accepted a spiogot bearing, to support the other end of the gearbox input shaft.

Hi John,the problem with the imp transaxle is that it doesn't like big power mate,have a look over on the imp club site there are some clever gearbox guru's who have tried all ways to keep the transaxle case from breaking up and the diff pin from shearing, an imp dog box would be the jack Knight box which is unbelievably expensive and not nice for a road car.
I am not trying to put you off mate just telling you the transaxle pitfalls.
In the last few Impressions magazines (the imp club mag) there have been write ups about strengthening the casings and using double diff pins and also uprating the shafts to do away with the rubber drive couplings,to put things in perspective there was an imp fitted with a 1400 twin cam rover 'k' series fitted onto the imp trans but the torque of that (1400) engine killed the transaxle within weeks!

i have the cash for a jack knight jobby but i will get it working and then convert my box, just a 4 speed mind. I'm fully aware of the imps transaxle pitfalls but i would rather stay away from mid mounting

don't know if it will fit in the space but how about a vw transaxle
a beetle will stand a fair bit of abuse and there are lots of upgrades available, or the bus box which will withstand a heck of a lot and again upgrades are available but an option i am looking at for my beetle is a passat/audi box mounted upside down giving decent ratios, a choice of 5 or 6 speeds, and subject to which one is used, pretty well unburstable
also i believe there are adaptor plates "off the shelf" to fit just about any engine

how you going to mount a box upside down? how do you feed the diff oil?

Isnt the Renault Transaxle or a Hewland more suitable for your application....just a thought

the diff is splash fed according to this guy who has done it with his vw bus

pps didnt someone post a link to a clutch sit which gave all the sizes, splines dimensions etc, seem to think it was in athread about a volvo which turned out to have a unique clutch

As long as I'm reading this right why not make life simple and fit a 20v n/a passat engine and box ?

Just spotted you want to keep the engine at the back , if your dead against a proper mid mount I would pick any modern fwd package and stick it in the back

the passat engine is in front of the box so to go in the back the box has to be upside down or you get 5 or 6 reverse gears, so the engine needs to be the right way up needing either the bellhousing rotating or an adaptor plate made
although another possibility could be a boxter box but that would entail porker prices

Just download a copy of the Quinton Hazel clutch catalogue - it gives you the overall diameter of the clutch, diameter of the spline, and the spline count, for every car (give or take)

I used it to find a suitable friction plate, that would fit an R380 'box (Ford), upto a XUD engine (citroen)

You could try contacting Helix clutches, as they can make you a plate/cover with the correct dia and spline type, even a paddle clutch if you like.
As for the gearbox, what about a Skoda 130/Rapide box.
My mate rallied a Skoda 120 fitted with a 1700 Ford X-flow, no gearbox problems although it did tend to run out of brakes!
They even have proper CV type driveshafts.
