Oil Cooler Pros and Cons - To Fit or not to?

Recently I have thought about acquiring one for the Stag.

However, whilst I admit cars like my 944 and MGB may have come with them can fitting one cause more issues than it is worth?

Some information suggests that the Stag could use an oil cooler (Sump capacity is below 5 litres), others believe that they are only really necessary on a Stag for when either towing or driving at high speed (I was planning on going to Europe (not too far away from England!) in the future but that will not be for quite some time yet.

I'd say: Fit a oil temp gauge and monitor your oil temperatur under various driving conditions. Then decide if your engine could benefit from a cooler or not.

And if you do need one put a stat in the circuit to speed up warm up times

Normally only really worthwhile if you're doing a lot of sustained high revs, or towing up hills.

I think a oil cooler was a dealer fitted extra on the B, it was quite expensive (and a good earner for the dealer!)

You can imagine the scene at the MG dealers "of course you need an oil cooler, it's sports car and you'll drive it fast, won't you" says the salesman!

Be careful of over-cooling it, oil needs to be at a certain temp to work and I'd also wonder about the oil pressure with the extra pipes and the pressure drop across the cooler.
