Hi, I'm new on here. My main passion is Classic Porsches - I run a club and a forum www.ddk-online.comI'm looking to buy a new daily runner and Mk1 Golfs are really doing it for me right now - just nice subtle retro style rides. So, what should I go for, how much should I look to pay, where should I go to find them and any general advice. Cheers Bootsy

Well, to find one, you could try the owners club for Golfs, I'm not sure who you would talk to about that. Price wise, for a tidy respectable GTi, I'd say too much higher than £1600 is taking the curse word, although again I'm no expert. There are a few Golf owners on this Forum who could give you better advice.

it's also worth looking round and asking on these forums: www.clubgti.com/forum/www.edition38.com/Plenty of people on there that know their stuff! The really early ones are fast appreciating in price - the small, chrome bumpers, chrome mirrors and so on are worth a fortune individually! A late bigger bumpered one like mine is maybe a more practical daily driver, depends what you're after really! £2k should easily get you a totally mint GTI, solid straight ones go from £800ish upwards really. Things to look out for: rust obviously, if it's injected check the pipe that runs from the cap to the tank for rust - it clogs up the injectors. Some panels aren't available new any more - back panels I think especially. As I say, have a look/ask on those forums and peeps will help you out no bother! if you've any specific questions, feel free to PM me and I'll help as best I can!

As Darren said really. Get the best shell you can as almost all of the mechanical parts are still readily available. Best Daily driver's are latter post '82 cars as they have much better rust proofing.
Wanna buy a Mk1 scirocco instead? ;D

ClubGTI is a great place to start ;D The trouble with the Mk1 (and increasingly the Mk2 now) is that there are a lot of dogs out there. Rust, poor maintenance and badly repaired damage has lot to do with this as well as just old age. Also there are a lot of badly modded Mk1 GTI`s as well

The main thing to watch out for is prices...like i think everyone has touched on so far....they seem to range from taking the curse word to diabolical insult..... Don't get fleeced for bits on ebay either... - haha... can you tell this is a subject that pisses me off no end - water cooled vw parts - second hand prices.... " yes i'll just pay over the odds for second hand mass produced parts " ;D
