best thing to use to re stick door card vinyl?

as title really got a lot of questions to be asking you'se all!

basically the plywood/chipwood door card backing was rotten and had no corners so in my attempt to re door card the doors what would you use to stick the original vinyl onto the new door card wood?

Carpet spray adhesive on the main front section. Buy it from a proper 'local' carpet shop and ask for the stuff that the fitters use, the cans you buy in places like B&Q aren't as effective.

Spray a liberal amount all over the door card and the back of the vinyl then leave it for about 10-15mins to go really tacky. Then lay the vinyl onto the card and smooth it out starting from the centre working out to the edges and the corners. Take your time and do it carefully to make sure it sticks down nice & smooth. You can pull it off and reapply if you need to, but I've always managed to get it on in one go.

When you come to folding over the edges and sticking them down to the back of the door dard, use impact adhesive. Again, spread it over the area that needs to hold the vinyl and also a thin layer on the vinyl itself. Leave for the period they recommend on the instructions then stick this down with a lot of pressure. I usually use some gaffer/duck tape to hold it down while it's curing....and often just leave the tape in place at the end anyway as an added means of holding the vinyl in place.

Unlike the front face which has a lot of surface area to hold the vinyl in place, the edges that fold over the back side of the card have a lot less area to bond to and often want to spring free and fold back. This is why using the stronger impact adhesive is advised for this part.

I've never, ever had any problems doing the above method. It's quite rewarding to see the end result!

Here is a link to my build thread where I recovered my door cars in black vinyl. I'm covering over the original vinyl, but the principle is still the same. Mine was slightly more difficult because the vinyl wanted to spring back more when folded around the edges due to being new. I didn't use impact adhesive in the photos (stupidly didn't have any to hand at the time because the tube I was going to use had dried up!!) and the corners did start to peel back a bit...but I soon remedied that when I got a new tube of adhesive and stuck them down properly. I've used it for many, many years (the joys of Graphic Design!) and it's brilliant for sticking paper/thin card together, but anything remotely heavy it just won't cope with. Especially long term...it dries out after a while too.

Plus it's pretty expensive for what it is. Very handy stuff, but use it liberally rather than for everything. I'd never personally even consider it for something like mounting vinyl to a door card. Happy to be proved wrong, but from personal experience of the stuff I just can't see how it could work for more than a few hours at best.

Wow thanks Bruce certainly got the juices flowing right there! will shoot down my local carpet shop and get some of this and again update the thread!

just need to make the cards this weekend too which WILL be time consuming as when I do a job I do it right once cheers for the help there again Bruce

Glad I could be of some help.

Here are some rear panels I made for my Delica (like door cards, but not fitted to doors). I used the exact same adhesive to stick the main faces on and also for the fabric edges folded over the back (no impact adhesive on this one). It probably worked better than the vinyl because the fabric didn't keep wanting to peel back to being flat if that makes sense? They came out pretty well even if I do say so myself.

cheers, i think the only issue i will have is installing or re installing the door card clips i think i can use generic plastic ones if not it willhave to be the original complicated clips if you get what i mean, anyway cant wait saturday i shall commence repairing these 2 door cards
