Has anybody had a bash at this? I went and watched the classic trials as it was only over clee hills not that long ago and it looked pretty fun to do and relatively cheap to get into. There were some nice Mk2 escorts and some purposeful looking beetles, mainly retro stuff to be fair such as 205's, MK1 golfs, E30 bmw's etc but just wondered if it was as fun to have a go at as to watch? My favorite motor of the day, 1300, IRS, trekker spindals, semi - auto floor pan converted to manual

Blimey! It obviously wasn't rear-heavy enough for them already!

I've been a marshal on the Clee Hills and Cotswold Clouds trials for years. I'm building a Beetle similar to the one above and will have a go at the Clee Hills if I ever get it finished. Like you say, very cheap to enter and very friendly, laid back competitors. Some people run a completely standard car, just fitting an extinguisher and maybe a sump guard or, at the other end of the scale, there are purpose built 'specials' in classes 7&8. There's a class for just about anything. I like watching the pre-war cars and there are a growing number of interesting, highly modified FWD cars competing. The main rules are- no 4WD, no limited slip diffs and only road tyres. Info on getting started here www.actc.org.uk/how.htmMore stuff here www.classictrials.co.uk/

Damn, just had a very quick look at the rules and by the looks of it my fairly standard A35 would be up against Ford Escorts etc I'm guessing I won't be competitive then, but will have a deeper look into it and might have a go anyway.

Looks good fun and wouldn't mind attendeding an event (as a spectator). Love the stumpy Lotus 7 style specials.

production car trials and classic trials are 2 different things. at the moment i do production car trials in a 1.1 mk1 golf. To make it fair the smaller your engine capacity the more you can let down your tyres giving you more grip. a production car trial is held in a single venue usually being a field with the sections being layed out between poles. my current car;

Weight distribution and ground clearance seems to be the key from what i can see. You don't need 150bhp, and anyway it would be pointless if it continually bellied out everywhere. I'd love to do a beetle but there a fair bit of money for something thats roadworthy. I know production trials are different, never watched it but would like to. Choice of cars perhaps: Pug 205 - seem to compete well Rover Metro - you could get decent clearance with the hydro set-up Citroen AX - very light Volvo 340 - might be a bit heavy? Renault 5 - again light and easy to work on And all cheap to buy ;D

Well I might give it a go and see how I do but I can't imagine it going to well.
I'll add to the list of choice cars: Citroen 2CV Citroen Mehari (basically a 2CV)
Both weigh barely anything, all the weight they do have will be over the driven wheels, huge ground clearance (more on the Mehari I think). But I would pick the Mehari because everyone near where I go in France seems to use them and this is for foresty and sandy areas.
Other choices I might include is the 1.1 version of the Peugeot 106

Good call with the car choices. My dad uses a 205 gti and my younger brother uses an ax. The ax is probably the most used car in our club.

I did one in a 1.4 309 GL years ago, not competitive but good fun. I seem to remember the guy who won was in a bog standard suzuki swift, he just knew what he was doing

Great fun; being so light, the car was very capable, though all the bouncing did unfortunately identify the weak areas in the floorpan - which made it an expensive day out... ;D

Great fun, even managed a 4th overall at one of 'em. Then blew the diff on the way home. Fantastic fun, you just need a low-powered light car and a hefty mate for bouncing ballast. Fancy another go Dave? We could clean up now. ;D

Me and a couple of people are doing the Exeter trials next year.Went to spectate this year, and seems very do-able.Super friendly lot as said, and fairly cheap to do. I was thinking a jacked up Ford Ka?Cheap to run and buy.The Exeter trials route is approx 300 miles long! Other cars that did well when we were there were; Suzuki X90 Pug 205(Diesel particulaly) Triumph TR7
All did very well.Only thing that really struggled was a Mk1 Micra.But think was more driver error!
Ive got all the proper bumf printed out should you need to know anything.We have to join the club too before we can enter.
