Steering wheel boost control switch

I've got a gizmo boost controller and would like to rig up a boost memory/ over boost momentary switch on my steering wheel. I've got one of these for my Momo steering wheel..

I didn't really check my steering wheel setup but for some reason thought the horn wiring went through the center of the coloumn... It doesn't, it works though a spring loaded contact.
My next thought was to get my hands on a airbag squib and use the existing pass through wires but it's not that straight forward finding one etc..

I remember watching rallying and they use a coiled wire to attach to various switches on their steering wheels..

Won't the wire just wrap around the steering coloumn? I can't really picture this unless I experiment with an old phone coiled cable..

What do you guys reckon..? I can take pictures of my steering 'area' if that helps..

Depending on the car it could get caught/jam in the gap between the wheel and the steering wheel cowling.

On rally cars I doubt they had the plastic cowling, so not going to snag.


I wouldnt have a problem using coiled wire, but I'd make sure it was long enough not to put resistance on the wheel at full lock, and not floppy enough to get in the way when loose.

Gut the remote and fit in the boss with extended wires for the switch to the buttons you already have.

I had looked at something like that but not on eBay. Is the little electronic mother board at the side of the fob actully part of the fob? It looks bigger?
I have 2 wires coming out of the boost controller and 2 from my switch.

The board on the left of the picture in the last eBay ad you posted is not in the remote, it is what the remote talks to. Mount that somewhere near your wheel, luckily I runs on 12v.

The board has two relays, I'd guess two 'change over' types. If the circuit is set up a certain way, the relay contacts (like a switch) will close when you push the remote button. In effect you are pressing the button on the remote, but switching electrically on the board.

The two wires from your boos controller to the switch (at a guess, do you have any more info on the controller?) will need to be connected to a relay common and a 'normally open' contact. I'll check that ad again and see if I can get some more info. HTH

Page 15 is the wiring diagram showing the switch. I realised from the second eBay link that there is a transponder (the fob)and a receiver. I imagine it will be set up with one button opening the garage door and the other closing?

If this will work for what I want it will be ideal!

Re-read your post, at a guess I'd say yes. Might be a bit fiddly, there may be similar projects to be found online.

Don't worry about most of it, it isn't relevant at all.

This is what the inside of his remote looked like, the one on ebay will look something like it.


Turn the circuit board over and you can see where the little switches are soldered, he has soldered on a couple of wires for a switch, just like you are wanting to. He has done both switches, you'd only need one.


As you can see, it's all pretty small stuff and a bit fiddly to solder - but entirely doable.

That's the wheel end sorted, this is for the car end. Your blue and red wires from the boost controller will need to be connected to the control box from the remote system.

So you have this board, with a row of screw clamp terminals on one side...


Underneath, connection details are written on the circuit board.



Notice at the top, you have NC1, COM1 and NO1. NC means Normally Closed, ie when the relay is off, the contact is CLOSED. NO means normally open, ie when the relay is off, the contact is OPEN. COM1 is the common supply to the relay, you put the live wire here.

When the relay is off, the COMMON is connected to the NC contact. When the relay is on, COMMON is connected to the NO contact.

When you press the button on your remote control, it turns on the relay.



You may have worked it out by now, but you need to wire your RED to COMMON and BLUE to NO. It would work with the wires the other way round, but it is good practice to put the voltage source on the COMMON pin.

I would have used the horn push and horn wires to operate the switch and put the horn switch elsewhere if you were desperate to put it on the wheel.
Be fine the way you want to though,take some pics when it's all done.

Ok, that looks usable. Do you have a multimeter by any chance? Just need to check which way the buttons work. I'd guess they're normally open, ie the switch is off until you press it.

Does it look like you'll be able to mount the device around the wheel somewhere?

Yeah I've got one, shall I check both buttons? I'll get onto this next week. The plan is to mount this inside the steering wheel boss behind the horn contact. It's a Momo steering wheel.
