New Motor: Pug 306d - Questions!

Hi all,

So I've just bought a non turbo diesel 306 1.9 with the XUD lump.

Pretty decent, has near-full service history and has done 140k. Questions:

1) The leccy window / mirror switch is fooked. Got another coming, does it just pop out of place and unplug? It can't be that easy, it's a French car after all!

2) Apart from whether it has a Bosch fuel pump, what's to stop me going down Lidl and filling it with veg oil? Understand I need to thin it with at least a gallon or so of diesel, is that correct? Also is it legal?

3) I've been told when I service it I should at the very least drain the water out of the diesel filter, but I'd be better off replacing the filter anyway - How easy is that to do and what's involved?

4) (Related to the above) - How do you know you have a Bosch fuel pump - Identifying marks / features?

if you run veg oil then do a mininum 40% diesel to veg oil to thin it down,.

If it has got a bosch pump (will say somewhere on the pump) It will run on 100% veg oil in the summer but might need thinning down in the winter. You can use up to 2500L a year legaly without paying duty

The main feature, is the square high-pressure head that the injection lines fit into.


A little tip - don't be tempted to turbo this engine, as the non-turbo XUD blocks are substantially weaker than their turbo counterparts. It'll just grenade itself

The switch may not be the switch...

A pillar to door looms wear terribly. Check the wires for continuity before buying anything.


Fuel filter- literally unwind 4 hex head socket screws, remove cap, lift out filter, add new o rings as applicable, add filter, replace cap. Easy!

Using veg oil, I covered 30k using XUDs on SVO.

Ideally you should have the injector nozzles updated and pop tested. I'd recommend HighCompresionII on the veg oil website to do this.
You should advance your point of injection timing slightly also- this can be done DIY using a dial guage to calibrate it fully.

Thanks Johna, I think you're right as although the leccy mirror switch was clearly shafted as it just flopped around limply, now I've replaced it with a good used one but still no joy. Also the electric windows are a touch intermittent and won't open when you open the door. I understand the way to fix this is to taken the looms off and repair or replace them? How do I get them off? I tried to undo the loom at the door end and it just spun round without undoing.

I've definitely got a Lucas pump so no half price fuel for me! Having said that I've just serviced it and the air filter was waaaaaaay past being due so now the engine can breath properly I'll probably be getting the promised 50-55 mpg now. It's a lot quicker now too, I was wondering how I was going to live with its pedestrian performance before....

I have a new problem now - The screen washers don't work. I can hear the pump going so have tried disconnecting the line where it joins the bonnet but nothing was being pumped through. I then disconnected the rear washers and the fronts started working ??! Now that I've re-connected the rears the fronts don't work again though!

Any ideas?

Washers, rear jets tend to clog up and get blocked. Rears are not an MOT item AFAIK, so leave them disconnected.

Door looms, I seem to recall a circular collar needing to be turned and pulled, but you can simply split the boot and access the wires directly if you don't want to keep the car as a perfect specimen!

I had crazy central locking on mine as the wires chaffed, split, snapped and touched each other!

Nice, thanks John - Will have a crack at splicing the looms and repairing with duck tape or similar once I'm done. There was indeed a circular collar on the door end but how do they come off from the post? It'd be a lot easier to fix off the car.

As for the washers - How could the rears (Which work fine) affect the pump's ability to work the fronts?! Anyways will try disconnecting the rears again.

Only thing now is to get the original cassette stereo out and replace with the spare Sony unit I've got kicking around along with the fascia, cage and loom kit per-chased from eBay for a tenner. How does the stereo come out?
