Thanks as for the length of the pipe, I could have done it properly at work with a CAD based 1D model.... but in the end I used 'engineering judgement'

I agree... there may have been comments as the grill was being done about replicating the detailing on the rear logos about whether the front should match. I'll be honest... I wanted it to! I suspect it's going to be one of those fiddly little detailing upgrades down the line that might transform the front end of the car!

Not much to report on this one. It's all been going surprisingly well, and has even been doing Lauren's commute without issue - until Friday that was...

No idea how the nuts came loose, but the down pipe parted company with the manifold leading to much noise! Not the end of the world as it only took a few minutes to bolt back together with a new sealing ring.

Having a big leak did highlight that the exhaust may be restricting performance a bit - I suspect the reversed center box that probably isn't flowing all that efficiently in its backwards orientation.It seems it's time for a better flowing box, hopefully I won't make it stupid loud.....

Are you going to fabricate your own silencer from scratch or pull one out of a scrapyard??

Flipping paint!

So when the car was all finished, the paint on the passenger door looked like it might have sunk a little. No biggy we thought, can polish that back. But seems some of the paint below the top coat on this door was a bit nasty - and after a few days in the sun it got worse, much worse!



Basically whatever rubbish paint was hidden underneath hasn't actually set, and once it's got hot and then cooled, the top coat has slowly been cracked apart. The only solution was to pull the door off, get the paint stripper out and take it back to bare metal - joy! Has anyone else found that nitromors is now rubbish?

Anyway, -it's now with the painter, so hopefully some time next week it'll be back on and the car will be looking as good as it should. Thankfully this was a second hand door so the rest of the car should be safe - fingers crossed!

its hateful when that happens, it can be part of the fun of working on older cars unfortunately, make you sick in the stomach at this stage of the job, and yes Nitromorse has changed its curse word, think its now VOC compliant, there's different coloured labels for different strengths but I just use stuff I get in the hardware store, no brand on it just paint striper

Think they're worried about it getting drunk by babies or some curse word so they made it harmless and therefore useless.

Cheers guys, it was a right pain, but all sorted now and my painter friend has done a great job

On the Capri front, well other than it being shiney again the only thing to report is that we managed a camping trip to Cornwall with only one issue (cracked manifold which was welded up on the way) and the car held up great, works surprisingly well as a camping car. But the hills of the south west did highlight that a more torquey enging is badly needed, so will be keeping my eye out for something - probably a Sierra DOHC to start with, since it doesn't need to be fast, but would be nice to make it a more relaxed cruiser!

Anyway, have some photos from what must be one of the best campsite views in the country

Glad to hear the Capri made it down an back without too much trouble - that exhaust manifold was well and truly cracked though!

Apart from possibly a new engine, are there any more plans for this Capri or is it just general maintenance and crack on with the other one now??

Way too slow on the reply here, sorry, but the campsite was Trewethett Farm, near Tintagel. It's now a Caravan Club site (aren't they all?) but it's still got the stunning views from the camping field. Word of warning though - they won't let you camp if it's too windy!

No ecu/engine bay loom sadly but it was cheap enough, just need to find the other bits and knock up some mounts

Well after a couple of hours spannering we've got the engine out



Heck of a large hole to fill!

In other news I've liberated what I hope are the missing bits from a scrap Granada, so hopefully I've got everything I need to make it run now. Fingers crossed.

Now to try and get the new engine in, how hard can that be?!

Longish term I guess is the best way to put it. To be honest we'll see how this drives and if it's doing ok mpg and is pulling well enough it'll probably be there a while.
