Hi folks, does anyone have any words of wisdom (or useful links ) about changing the colour of a dashboard? The one currently in the Hunter is basic and past it's best - the good news is I've just collected a very nice dash from a later upmarket Sceptre Only snag is I collected it at night and have just noticed it's dark brown - any way to change it to black? Tried search on here but it keeps timing out I'm guessing options are paint, dye, or flocking? Tell me what I need to know ;D

i'd guess you couldn't dye it unless it's leather? and basically the prep for paint or flocking is the same - a good degrease, key and solvent wipe. depends whether you want an oem finish or not. and halfords vinyl paint seems quite good - i've had to remove it a on a few jobs and it's a pita to clean off!

Halfords bumper paint gets a good reputation, so you can bet it'll have an easier life on a dashboard. As others have said, a good clean-up and key (I lightly scuffed up my bumper with wire-wool), will prepare the surface. Paint in very light coats : DON'T be tempted to go for coverage in one coat. It's kinda cold and damp these days, so I'd be tempted to get some heat going for a better result.

We did this a few months ago in our track car and i was very impressed with how well it turned out. We had a cream dash that would reflect light onto the windscreen, we thought about flocking but as we had non to hand we just got out a few cans of satin black paint, cleaned it up, put on a coat of primer and then painted it. The end result actually looked like a factory black dash which was surprising. i would defiantly recommend painting. It was a plastic dash and not leather.

Was tempted to let this thread fade away but decided to add before & after pics below to show what can be done with an hours work and a can of spray-on vinyl paint. I'm very impressed, easy to get good results and it seems to dry almost instantly Thanks for all the ideas & suggestions, feel free to add my name to "Halfrauds Vinyl Paint" supporters club (fair to say I like this paint - as long as it stays on - but it's about the only thing of theirs I would recommend )
