Did many of you know, that it was Rover who apparently invented the layout of almost every jet-engine out there today? And it was they, who first realised to get mechanical power from a turbine, you were better off doing it through a secondary turbine? And because of that... they managed to throw it into a couple of cars for testing. The 6mpg, 100Bhp JET 1 The 6mpg, 240Bhp Rover T3 And leading upto, the beautiful, Rover BRM At LeMans, averaged 99mph (13.5mpg), even with engine damage! Info taken from: www.rover.org.nz/pages/jet/jet5.htmMy fave quote from there though, is typical "Rover": ;D

Isn't that the sequence for any Rover notebook? Interesting bits of info on this one, I knew about Jet 1 but not the others.

The Rover 2000 has it's strange front suspension because it was meant to have a gas turbine engine. But they couldn't get the MPG high enough.
Allegedly!

Well if you look at the link, it even says the P4 was 2 years before the P6, so they basically thought "yeah, this works, why change it?" Quite suprised if it was for the mpg though, as the essex v6 struggled to reach 25mpg,and that only had about 100Bhp The T4 engine they put into the P4, managed 20mpg, and had 140Bhp! I'd imagine it was more reliability than economy - and to save their customers cars blowing up quite as often lol Missed out on the chance to buy a Rover turbine generator a year or so ago... would be fun to shove one into a metro Also want to get my hands on an emergency portable Rover jet turbine water pump: Hand cranked (by TWO people) Take the pump off, and poke it out the back of a small gokart

theres more to life than mpg & to much power is just enough.

Its not just the MPG 'cos they'll burn almost anything flammable.
Gas turbines do not change speed very well, they are great for cruising but slow to react to changes in throttle opening so they can feel ponderous o the road, they also make a curse word load of noise and are made out of very expensive metals, even with far less moving parts they are still bloody expensive.
Time served Helicopter engines get put in cars sometimes (they have a gearbox already) but most of them end up in industrial machinery like water pumps.

Currently have a Rover Gas Turbine in my garage, sounds awesome when cranked by hand! (sorry about the poor pic, its a bit buried!) There is a really nice replica of Jet 1 based in Birmingham too, it was on show at the NEC last week

The Brits were pioneers in those days. Rover (BL) also pioneered front wheel drive and the 16v engine. Is just too bad we're hopeless at investing in long term development.
