I know this probably sounds stupid but a friend just asked me what would be a better buy, a petrol car with 100k miles or a diesel car with 100k miles? Both the same age, make and model. All being equal I would say the diesel? My thinking is that a diesels engine revs lower so over the life of a vehicle the diesel engine would have turned fewer times? therefore would have less wear....

Depends on how the car has been driven and looked after surely? Without seeing the car ........

It depends if 1 has done 100k around the doors or 100k up and down the motorways

It depends if 1 has done 100k around the doors or 100k up and down the motorways ^ This. Also how well it's been maintained. Buy purely on condition, not on preconceptions based on fuel types. Also bear in mind DMF issues on more modern diesels.

What i meant was if both cars had been driven and maintained in the same way, would the diesel engine last longer because it has to do less rpm for the same distance?

Not sure about that - but diesel tends to be slipperier than petrol, which might help the derv last longer.

To add another dimension... Some cars, different makes and models, last better than others. A hundred thou isn't end of life for most cars but if you're buying it to run for another hundred thou then it's worth bearing in mind.

Also bear in mind the engine size and power output as well.
A small engine in a big car will have to work far harder than a large engine in the same car. As such I would expect the larger engine to wear its miles better.
Its just not as simple as saying an engine running on one fuel will last longer than another, there is so much more to consider. If your buying a car with that sort of mileage go on the merits of the individual cars involved not what they run on.

Bear in mind bits of diesel engines (especially ones of the last 10-15 years) like injectors and pumps are horrifically expensive. Also, the diesel engine internals will have had to deal with more torque in their life, even if they have done less revolutions per 100k miles. As a general rule, I think it's safest to say there isn't a general rule. There are some fantastically strong petrol engines, and some very poor diesel ones.
Then there is the issue of driving the car... I would never choose diesel personally.

Based on the stuff I see day to day , diesels are less reliable and more expensive to repair than petrol engines .
A modern common rail diesel with 100k will have a lot more wear on the fuel delivery side than a petrol engine , the usual issues with pumps injectors and turbos seem to come at between 120-140k on average . Vauxhall have the most issues and volvo d5 injectors seem to last a lot longer than most diesels

I would say petrol Like froggy says Derv's can be hideously expensive to sort and - if its a retro, depends if it was knocked out on a friday afternoon just before clocking out time or a Tuesday morning ;D ;D

Depends on the vintage and make of car for me. If its a very new diesel with common rail i'll go for petrol, if its an older diesel that is well known for doing 200k without issue (like mercs or vw passats) then its diesel
But if its a much older car it wouldn't matter to me as i'd just rip the engine out and drop something else in anyway ;D

All being equal, petrol every time. No reason other than I personally don't like diesels and have had many 200k+ petrols with no problems

DI diesel and a MPI petrol, petrol every time. DI diesels are toooooooo complicated to last all that long without big bills. Older IDI diesel VS MPI petrol, I would take the diesel, simple low revving and makes power using the compression ratio rather than massive boost like modern engines. If it was a modern DI diesel VS a DI petrol, I would take the diesel. DI petrols are not yet at the point where they have managed to combat carbon build up and injector blocking. So to sum up, for me, it depends on the car and engine

ive just made this choice i had 206 petrol 1.4 and a 306 1.9 turbo diesel both cars 3 door, simalar miles, condition, both on t plates, now i like diesel but as it was about costs ive kept the petrol the 206 does 42mpg while the diesel does 50 sometimes 55 but with petrol 6p a liter cheaper the petrol is cheaper to run

Both about the same. Have known 300k+ ars with both engine types. All depends on maintenance, driving style and the quality of the engine to start with.
