I think Q looks better too, but insurance is a pain in the bum. Vauxhall Heritage rang me today, say they think the car is an import from the East/ central Europe (although all GTEs were made in Spain). Got GMs DVLA consultant on the case trying to find the source of the VIN number i have on the car.. its not a GTE allocated number.. so...lord knows!! mrrodney... i think we have the same cunning thoughts..
don't mention Minis? What about the 70s Ford Rally team, reshelled everything 5 times and made it common knowledge !!
But hey, I'm not opening that can of worms..

In my experience:Q plates on kitcars are not a problem for insurance. Most kitcar insurance is specialist based and therefore (takes a deep breath) understanding...ish. When I say kitcars I mean your Duttons onwards and upwards. If you have a heavily modified Q'd "production" car as per the earlier Escort, that you declare all the mods on to the insurance, again I have found the specialists quite good and (cough) understanding. If it is a "standard" car that has lost its ID though cat B (dropped through the net,it happens..) or the insurance have paid out after theft and notified the DLVA it not longer exists, normal non specialist/insurance can be really awkward regards the value of the car when, and if you claim on it. They will all snatch and take varying sums of money off you for varying degrees of cover. Edit to add petrolheads don't care what the plate is..just think."no, the Lotus Carlton isn't for me..its on a Q" words you will not hear from me...but, a big but, with a Q on a production car it will affect the value.

What about the 70s Ford Rally team, reshelled everything 5 times and made it common knowledge !! Perfectly legal, with a brand-new shell from the manufacturer. Secondhand shell - especially to gain tax-free status - not so much.

How do you prove its a new shell? I have regestered new motorbikes, you get a certificate of newness, how would a manufacturer get legal docs for a shell only ?

I suspect that a receipt detailing what was sold would suffice.

another Q pic, my Dads old mallock clubmans car, used for hillclimbs and road registered; please tell us you took that on the road.... imagine popping into tesco and parking up. I've had a few quotes recently on Westfields on Q plates and there's no difference in price so it is likely that there's an understanding around that type of vehicle. OP, how many different ID's and numbers are on the car? GM may be able to tell you where a few hidden ones are, sometimes they're under rubber seals etc. Could be worth asking incase it turns something up. Then again it may not match the ones you do have... keep us updated

You could actually re-shell it into a completely legit shell making everything super tidy along the way, end up with a fantastic immaculate car and be content in the fact you put a wrong thing right?

So it looks like I'm stuck with the Q...... Thats got to be BS, they're saying th surely they have a record of the vehicles that they built and the serial numbers that were allocated to each range. Have you tried one of the clubs to see if they can help? Some one will have some records.

shove a body kit on it and sell it as a road legal track car to a 17 year old? Maybe 10-15 years ago After taking my students to visit the local college the other day, I was surprised to note the majority of the college lads and lasses drove Binis, high end Focii, mkiv Golfs and other 'expensive' and reasonably high insurance bracket vehicles. The idea of rocking up in a body kitted Nova and saying 'who wants it?' would likely be met with dirision and ridicule from said 18 year olds. Back to the OP mentioning a Q plate Nova GTE; don't suppose it's a candy white colour? My brother's old GTE ended up on a Q plate a few years back, although I assumed that the car is long, long gone.

Nah, its a glossy black, its a solid old thing, if you go on google images, scroll down... its there. Maybe selling as i bought it to rally convert and serious lack of time means I'm probably gonna have to buy an already prepared car.....
