Ok No pictures yet as i am work but just before i left for work i FINALLY took delivery of my dream car.....a Trabant!! However I've hit upon a stumbling block already, it has no VIN plate. I knew it had no documents and it still wears its East German Number plates. Its complete but a bit rusty in places but nothing that will worry me. I know people will say that i was a prat for buying with no papers etc. But what options do i have? I bought it from an old mate from school who got it from some old bloke and that's all i know. I'm told it was made in 1987 as that's whats stamped on the bulkhead. Any one know what to do? I'm both elated and devastated at the same time.

Is the chassis number stamped somewhere?
You need a vin plate, stamp it with the chassis number and get the owners club (I assume there is one) to write a letter stating that in their opinion, it is a Trabant 601, manufactured in year whenever.
Mot it on the chassis number (they will have to do it as a new entry), insure it on the chassis number (specialists will be able to do this temporarily), then get the relevant registration forms from the Dvla.
Sends forms off (preferably with a receipt of purchase) with a cheque to cover the road tax, get v5 and registration number issued. Easy!

As long as you have something (i.e. the reg number), can't the German version of dvla help you with information?

VIP, that was a very unhelpful answer! Mr Young, there are plenty of people who get cars with no identity, I would call the DVLA and have a chat. As the Trabant is a homologated vehicle you should be fine with an MOT etc  Then you needs some bits like this -  |

First I will say well done on the purchase they are immensely interesting cars to read about and to restore. I've got a 75 that I don't have anything for apart from the plate on the bulkhead and iirc there's a plate stamped near the coil holders. The ifa.co.uk they will help with type approval and import queries the dvla have a pack you can order with the form and how to fill it in etc pm if you have any trabant questions I also have a link that I found for a document on how to modify trabant a for rallying incl engine roll cage, exhausts, suspension etc its in German but contains some nice drawings. For parts ldm tuning or just search trabi teile which brings bits up and of course German eBay. For lowering I think yours will have coil springs on the rear but the fronts you can reshape the leaf and I'm still working on it but I'm sure that gaz should have shocks that'll fit

I can recommend LDM tuning as I used them for parts for my Trabant.
If you haven't driven one on the open road yet then your in for a treat.
There nippy of the mark but not a lot of top end, but are respond well to tuning. ;D

Well this has gone pear shaped very quickly. My wife took our daughter to a birthday party so i had most of today to myself. So i made a start on the trabbie, i stripped out the remains of the carpet and seats. Found some rust but noting to intimidating,until i got to the drivers side A pillar. The door check strap has ripped through and rust has crept up round to the roof frame. A massive lump has fallen out of the door frame and now theres too much flex in the body. Coupled with the rot in the bulkhead its too much for me. I've decided to strip it down and box up the parts ready for the next one that comes my way. On a side note i found out that it came from Dresden originally.
