I've got a Mk1 and its pretty reliable apart from Stromberg carburettors going out of tune, but the Mk2 should have SUs which are better.
Thrust washers on the crankshaft have been known to wear out and allow the crank to move wrecking the engine, try and move the crank pulley in and out, if it moves the washers are worn.
These Triumphs have a lot of bushings in their suspension so listen for knocks, they should handle well but they roll a lot on bends.
Engine mounts are a bit weedy.
I read somewhere that the autobox needs a rebuild around 80-90,000 miles .
They are a super smooth old cruiser but not exactly a ball of fire.
Mpg around 24-26 in everyday use
Watch for rust in sills and the wings are double skinned and welded on.
Doors rust from inside out due to water getting trapped in a piece of sponge used to stop window winder rattling
I had to change the 4 doors on mine

I'm a fan of the 'big' Triumphs...very underrated IMO. It's worth remembering that good ones aren't too expensive so there's no reason to buy a dog (like I did!). Most parts are easily available so I'd say a solid shell is more important than say, a clean interior or smart wheels.

Another potential disaster spot on them is rot in the rear spring mounts. The rear springs can end up going through the floor of it gets really bad. I have repaired ones that bad in the past. Sadly they are a bit rust prone and it apears all over the place.

The sliding splined section of the rear driveshafts can begin to sieze up making for some odd handling characteristics. Easily cured though and I believe you can upgrade to use Datsun rear shafts which don't have that problem.

In general they are pretty durable old busses mechanically and I found them very nice to drive. They certainly have a fair degree of tuning potential as well as a half decent suspensio set up for a big car.

I used to work at a Triumph specialist and most of the work I ever had to do on them was welding and bodywork..not much mechanical stuff so I'd conclude from that they are fairly robust.
