Hi everyone, finally got round to joining, probably could have done with being a member while i still had my 1986 Capri, but that was a while ago. Just bought myself a bargain motor for some fun in the sun... 1997 MGF 1.8... not sure if it counts as retro though? I'm sure i can post a project thread up as i go though. - Chris

Its a hard thing to find, the cut off limit of what is retro and what is not. Your car is 16 years old so its getting towards retro. I still use the site and I have a K reg celica and a N reg Jaguar, there are retro-ish but not full on retro cars. A 99 Mondeo is a standard run of the mill family car (great motors, I had a 98 one) but theres nothing interesting about one. Your MGF is something that would interest me though.

Stick a thread up, if you get little feed back then prob not many intereted, but if your happy, who cares I would say an Mgf is retro, especially if you do something a bit different or even a resto

I posted a reader rides thread on my 1985 Suzuki Alto and still hardly got any feedback on here! I think it's more to do with the car then if it's retro or not.

As your asking for opinions i`ll offer mine. I think the mgf has retro styling and is pretty cool for a `new` car. If your going to mod it alittle and do something interesting to it id say it would fit in well here. The problem with the mondeo is theres nothing interesting about them in standard form whatsoever. I don't think you could find a more bland car. If the owner (or sons owner) had said they were going to do something interesting to it and take it away from the norm then id have been interested to see its build thread.

If you go overboard with camber and weld a daft exhaust to it then it'll go down a treat on here...
All I know is I'd like to have a thrash down some lanes in one :-)

Interesting, about Mondeo's being "bland and unintersting" the same thing was said about Sierra's back in the day, "Jellymould" I think the term was. Even back in the early 70s all Japanese cars were accused of being soulless!! and now look how they are regarded. So, the distance of time can help, it's your car you can say what you want about it.

Even after owning about 10 sierras i think they're extremely bland stock. don't know someone posted a 99 mondeo and everyone said NO The thing with the mondeo was that it was completely unmodified, and the guy meant to keep it that way. Then it all went downhill quite fast. And there were as many nice comments as negative ones. Back on topic - I'd read it if there will be some modifications taking place, at least some proper wheels and a lowering. If you make a thread containing 3 pictures of your new car without any kind of follow up or plans it won't get to many replies. Read up a bit in readers rides and see what kind of threads get attention. If you follow the tested and true awesome-wheels-and-slammage formula i'm sure you'll make a few fans.

I've never driven an MGF but I like the look of them and I can't help thinking they'd make an interesting alternative to an MX5. If you're planning mods (the lowering/wheels kind and/or the power hike/engine swap kind) or a well-written and photographed restoration or 'living with' report then it'll fit right in. I'm locking this thread because 'is this retro?' and 'what is retro?' threads are somewhat pointless and usually don't end well.
