Early MR2’s are notorious for having rusty wheel arches. The one on the left of the car has been replaced already (and smashed in).
The right side is in remarkably good condition apart from this patch. I still don’t know if the main part of the arch has been replaced.





Here’s the SP.

The lower rear (in the red circle) has been replaced already. However the inner arch in this area (the green arrow) doesn’t meet up with the outer arch. It’s rusted away and wasn’t replaced when the outer was replaced. It’s close - a few millimetres - but not quite. It was filled with seam sealer.

The main arch seam between the yellow arrows is missing or knackered and needs replacing. But, surprisingly, the rest of the arch is ok. A bit of surface rust but not terrible.





The bulk of the seam hasn’t blown apart so I’ll rust treat it and try and keep the water out.

Set at it with the power tools. There’s a fair thickness of filler on here which I’ll have to blend into.





Best start making the replacement arch section then.

A piece of steel goes in the “TonyBMW’ bending contrivance.





And then gets a good lamping with a block of wood and a lump hammer.





Finally dressed with a small tapping stick to get a sharper corner.





Test fit! Yay!





Dismal! Boo! Well, I suppose it’s a bit straight which might be a problem. Wonder what it’d look like with square arches?
But at least the radius of the corner is looking reasonable.

To put the curve in it’s out with the shrinker / stretcher.





It curves in two directions. The obvious wheel arch, but it also curls under the car a little. There was much back and forth and swapping between jaws in the tool until I got it something like right.

Looks ok… It touches the existing arch anyway.





And from the back?





I’ll call that a win.

I've ended up re-evaluating this idea you're doing for the Princess and ditching the head unit completely. I'm hoping this makes things easier since I'm planning to run the MP3 decoder through an amp hidden in one of many locations suitable for it in the car, and then out into the four speakers. Nothing fancy or loud, just something adequate. Since I don't need radio, tape, or CD functionality I expect this will work and be compact.

Like your hide-away idea I'll be using the dashboard blanking plate, hinged for access, so it's a fairly invisible system. I'll let you know how I get on when I eventually get all the bits together for it properly. Might be a couple of years knowing me.

That's pretty much how this works so it should be fine. The only slight downside of my system is that the MP3 player forgets it's EQ settings each time you turn it off. Hence the idea of building the EQ into the relay circuit.

Hello Mr Overdrive. It's been a while, are you well?
Now, without wanting to contradict you, the car did dump its oil over most of it's back end (and a fair bit of Kent) the other week. I think that what it deserves is parking in a field and burning. But as that would cost more in petrol than the car's actually worth I'll keep plodding on fixing it.

I think the only thing I'm missing is the LHS rear mudflap. But I've been wondering about doing something 'interesting' with 2 pack silicone to re-create one. Or possibly fibreglass? Hmmm. Don't hold your breath!

Mudflaps, or "cancer-catchers" as i more accurately describe them, were never present on mine. To be honest i wouldn't recommend them as the arches need naff-all excuse to turn to dust at the best of times!

varelse , I actually quite like the cat flap idea. If I had a different outlook for the car I'd do it. But it's supposed to be quite tidy so you are out of luck!

ToolsnTrack , Yeah, I completely agree about the mud flaps being a haven for rust. Especially when they are screwed straight through the arch return with self tappers like mine was. The mud flaps on the 80's Corollas actually rusted themselves, very impressive as they were made of plastic! (For those of you not intimate with 80s Toyota mud flaps, they have a metal insert in them which is what actually rusts.)

Problem is this... Ascetically, I like them. The early cars without side skirts look fine without mud flaps but, in my opinion, the cars with skirts need something behind the wheel to pick up the line. To my eye it just doesn't look right without them.

When you refit the mud flaps use a plastic square peg fitment. Toyotas version of a rawl plug 8mm x 8mm. They push into a newly created square hole. Said flap fixing screw type bolt then screws throug flap into plug which expands at other side of panel
I'd sort you a pic but it's a pain in R's on my phone to do
