I mentioned that I had a small pile of warning lights to consider. When the engine is running I have the Alternator Charge warning light and the Engine Bay Cooling Fan warning light. Oddly I'm never seeing the Check Engine warning light. Although if I unplug the alternator and turn the ignition on I don't get the Charge light but I do get the Check Engine light. Confusing eh? More confusingly Toyota seem to have dioded the Fan light to the Charge light so that the charge light brings on the fan light too. I have no idea why. How are you supposed to diagnose the fault when all the poxy lights are on? I'm fairly convinced it's not charging so I'll start there. Before the rain came down I checked the voltages on the alternator plug and they all seemed OK. So I guess it's the alternator. I took it off and retreated to the garage to take it apart. I checked the windings and the diode pack. All ok. So that leaves the regulator pack but the manual shows no way to test that. My best bet is to stick the alternator on my Alternator Test Facility - that is to say, bung some wires on it and measure the voltage on the slip rings. The switch is the ignition switch and the bulb that you can't quite see is the charge warning light. So, rigged up on the Test Facility I get 2.5 volts on the slip rings. I have no idea if that's right or wrong but it's definitely better than nothing. One more thing to do is spin it up with a drill and see if the light goes out. Yes it does! See, if you can spot the bulb in the photo you'll see it's not on. I saw a bit over 13V at one point but the drill was going a bit flat. All that remains is to bung it back on the car and see what happens. But it's rained so much the car is up to it's axles and I need a boat to get to it. So I finished welding the bumper. And then, shock horror, I painted it. Er, does that mean it's finished??? James

Mine too mate, mine too. There's a word that my younger friends use when they find something disgusting and repulsive. It's 'ew' or 'eww' if it's really nasty. There is a good chance I can make you say it too… But first. Lights! Bumper! Car! Big smile. The end of 3 years work on that metal thing. Or rather 3 years weeing in a strong breeze. I screwed that together that while ducking in and out of the rain. When it was raining I sat in the car wondering what I needed to do there and giving it a wipe over. I was curious what had happened to the leather on the steering wheel. As can be seen below it looks as if it's been heat damaged and bubbled up or something. But it turns out that an afternoon with leather cleaner and a tooth brush and it comes off. Yes, it's 30 years of greasy dirty hands leaving a sticky residue that had built up to quite a knobbly thickness. The gooey remnants of people. You just said that 'ewww' word didn't you!? Well I did.

Well, that's a morning well spent - just read the whole thread through and absolutely love it.
Absolute kudos for the self taught metal bashing; I love the home made things such as the blast box, chemical rust bath, and oak/old bush former. That sill patch was lovely (and how do you drill square holes?)
Well and truly bookmarked - looking forward to much fun in the future such as cutting out the rear quarter. Steve

Whilst sweetpea is in an eww mood, I won't go into too much detail, but I've now had a full week clear of dripping any yellow matter (eww) and it actually, finally, really does look like it's trying to heal at last. Still a big 'ole and bloody sore, which is a nuisance, but getting there. Thanks for asking.

Fan light and charge light are on same circuit because water pump is on the same belt as the alternator. It'll boil up in about a minute if your belt goes. BTW kseries alternators fit these with a longer adjusting bracket.

Hi Morris63 Welcome to the thread. You are just in time to see it come to a crashing halt! Another little project is going to tie me up for a couple of weeks and I doubt the car will get a look in. westbay, the pictures are on flickr. It did get miserable with my old copy of Safari recently and forced me onto Firefox. Anyway, glad they are back. The leather cleaner was whatever was in the cupboard, which was some Betterware stuff. Did the job though but. georgeb glad to hear you leg isn't so likely to fall off at an inconvenient moment. There is already one person that I refer to as 'Hop Along', it'd get mighty confusing if there were two. DavidB I didn't know about the K series alternators. I'll remember that, thanks. I bunged mine back on yesterday and it's charging like a good'un. Not the foggiest why it didn't do that the first time round. James

Most likely your alternator had lost its residual magnetism. You connecting it to your test bed, has in effect, re flashed it, giving it its mojo back....or not! Hahaha.

The only thing I thought of is that I replaced some of the screws inside it (the heads chewed off) and maybe a new one was too long and shorted out. Anyway it's working now. So, do Canadians have unusually soft bottoms? The reason the thread has been a bit quiet for a few weeks is that we've been away on holiday. Three weeks in Ontario, Canada. Fast becoming one of my favourite places. Anyway, the reason I ask the question is that I noticed that the loo paper out there is kind of flimsy, kind of easy to tear. Not as like our good old British Bog Roll! Not as sturdy. But why would this be? The obvious answer is that Canadians have very soft and well pampered bottoms where as we Britons have altogether more rugged posteriors. But all Canadians are legally obliged to be - A, Lumberjacks or B, Mounties or C, Preferably both You'd think they'd have bums like sand paper. Plus the fact that in the winter Ontario can be -40 and you wee icicles and your farts come out as snow (don't eat the brown snow!). My theory has to be wrong surely? Hmmm. So, as soon as I've worked out an answer to this little conundrum I'll get on with the car. James

Got a bit lost trying to drop the hire car off you see. Where abouts? Well we hired a truck camper and toured. We went up through the Bruce Peninsular and through Manitoulin Island. Then up to Missinaibi Park for a couple of nights. Then to Lake Superior park, down to Killarney Park and ending at Massasauga Park. They wanted the camper back at that point so we picked up a car and spent a few nights in Algonquin to finish off. For those of you who might be reading this and aren't familiar with Ontario it's the canoeing capital of the known universe. It has such a rich canoeing history from the first nations and then the French and English traders who used canoes to cross the region and pack furs out to the coast for shipping to Europe. You can't go to Ontario and not get into a canoe. It's illegal. So this year, fed up with the hassle of renting canoes, we bought a very expensive inflatable canoe and flew it to Canada with us. This lived in a locker on the side of the camper and got chucked in the water at every possible occasion. Most of the areas we visited are on the 'voyageurs' trading routes and so we got to paddle bits of them. Brilliant!

so get back on the bloody motor! Ah, gentle encouragement I see! Fair enough. I popped to the garage for a few hours and made this bracket and cover plate. It's self explanatory really so I won't bother explaining. Oh, It's not self explanatory. I'll explain then. In my stock of bits I happen to have a battery master switch. It was fitted to an old 4WD I had. The bracket is to fit it to the MR2. The cover plate goes on top. It's not really needed but it's part of the mount that held it on the 4WD so I just modded it for the MR2. The whole lot goes here by the battery. I just need to get a battery terminal clamp for it. You might wonder why I bothered. Well there are 4 very good reasons. 1, Security. When I take the big key out it won't start. Not great security I admit but it might annoy somebody who was trying to pinch it. And I'm all for annoying people. 2, The car is probably getting parked during the winters. This means I can disconnect the battery without a spanner and it won't go flat. 3, Welding. You have to disconnect the battery for welding and this makes it easy. (I have a fair amount of welding to do…) 4, Er. Oh. Quick, somebody think of a 4th reason or I'm going to look like a total plank. James

You have canoed more of them than I though I suspect I have canoed longer on fewer Btw the real toilet paper reason is because Canadians are cheap and shop and restaurant owners buy the cheapest thinnest one ply paper you can possibly get - which always tears. And, just to connect the two thoughts. What is the difference between a Canadian and a canoe? A: a canoe tips. Now get back to the car. Cheers
