Definition of 'commuting' for insurance purposes

How frequent do you have to use a car to get to work, for it to be defined as 'commuting'?
I'm trying to get my premium down a bit and wondered if I could just use SD&P.
I work shifts, 21 days over a 5-week roster but most of the time, I use public transport, I only use the car if the trains aren't practical to get to or from work, generally very early in the morning.
I worked out that I drive on 5 of those 21 days, so less than 25% of the time.

For argument's sake, what would happen if I had SD&P cover and never drove to work, but for some exceptional reason there were no trains and I had to drive in and had an accident? Would that not be covered?

AFAIK it means no use what so ever for commuting. For myself the removal of commuting from the 3 x policies I have amounts to less than £10 per vehicle per year. Hardly worth risking to save such a small amount if you drive to work 25% of the time. I suppose your insurance, if caught, would only be third party so fire, theft or own damage wouldn't be covered.

If you're using the car to go to work, then you're commuting. Even if its only once a year, if you have an accident you won't be covered.

As the others said, you wouldn't be covered. Is the drop in premium that much? I saw little to no difference between the two.

limiting your mileage can be a good one to knock a little extra off but you have to know roughly how much your going to do.

It's taken some shopping around, but have managed to batter the robber barons down to something approaching reasonable! Now just have to hope the car itself is not a complete shed when I view it tomorrow...
