Since the forum software update I find it almost unusable. Whether that's because of my mobile broadband connection (which is generally good enough for most things, being a new Hilink dongle) or IE8 (due to being on XP) I can't say. The whole site takes an age to download, and IE becomes unresponsive while it is doing so. But then if I clicked on something while it was downloading, the link might move in the meantime and end up going somewhere else which takes an age to get back from. For example I clicked on the 'making panels' link, then as soon as it appeared I clicked on the '17' link to go to the last page. But because the page hadn't finished drawing, the click was misinterpreted and took me to the members list. If I start scrolling down a forum index page while it's still loading (but has been basically drawn), the thing keeps scrolling me back up to the top while it loads more stuff across the top. In fact, while typing this message in, I scrolled down to look for a box to tick for email notification of replies, and it scrolled me back to the top.
I know it looks more modern, but it seems that whoever designed the new forum software obviously hasn't taken into account anyone who isn't on the latest up-to-the-minute browser and a lightning-fast broadband connection.
Or is it just me? I know someone has put a lot of effort in to this, so I don't want to just be negative.

I suspect your problem is IE8 and XP, the new forum (like a lot of sites now) uses a fair amount of JavaScript and it would seem your current set up isn't up to it. Obviously you don't want to use Firefox or Chrome, although it would be worth giving chrome or opera a go to test performance. Can you upgrade to IE9, or did Microsoft stop supporting XP before they did IE9?

I think IE8 is the latest I can install on XP unfortunately.
I know these things are modernising all the time, but JS or not I don't see why it needs to jump about so damn much. I've just been via the general board and some kind of calendar because I clicked at the wrong time, having forgotten what I wrote above. And I know (from when I used to do web sites) that IE has never been popular with developers, and supporting very old versions even less so - but the key was that whenever you add a fancy feature, you have to make sure it doesn't cause chaos for those that don't support it. Trouble is, Chrome just isn't very good and all the buttons and menus are in different places to what I'm used to.
I'll try to remember to use Chrome to get on RR - it's not like I'm on here all that often in any case, and I have to use Chrome to upload photos to Facebook . I just don't like it, and I don't like web site developers (proBoards, not RR) making that decision for me just because they want to slow things down with a load of Javascript and pop-ups for the sake of it - let's face it, the 'share' buttons for example don't need to be floating, someone has done that because they think it looks 'cool'. All developers should have to use 386s with dial-up modems so they learn how to optimise their code.
Thanks for the response in any case. One day I might stick Win7 on something and get a later browser.

I used a crummy old pc I built out of scrap parts and XP. On Chrome RR works fine. On IE8 it's impossible - I think the welding on my Viva would be finished before IE8 launched......

I've got the same problem on my 'work' computer - also XP/IE8 - every time you try to scroll down it spazzes back to the top of the page. It's incredibly annoying. But as I can't install another browser or upgrade due to lock-down by the IT nazis I guess that it's just TOUGH TITTIES. :(

Well, to confirm suspicions it is IE8 - I have just signed in using Chrome and it's much better.

No problems using XP and IE 8 here. PC is an i5. Speed is noticably reduced over the pre-upgrade forum though

Or maybe it was removing the floating 'share' bar - I hadn't noticed that had gone, I'm now back in IE8 and it's much more usable.

Unfortunately if all developers worked on 386's to 'optimise' their code we'd still be reading sites through text browsers . It's the nature of the beast, IE8 and XP are both really quite old now and not supported by MS, backwards compatibility can only go so far otherwise it hinders moving forwards. IE8 like 7 is a pretty poor browser which is why it doesn't handle Java script well (code run locally not on the web server) and the slow downs occur. Browsers like Chrome and Opera deal with it more efficiently so there's less slowdown on an older machine. JM2PW

Yes, I agree with you on the progress thing. Maybe the testers should have the slow PCs, to keep the developers in line. I think my only comment would be that if the developers are smart enough to detect the difference, they can always direct me to the older site that did work perfectly well. And it's not like I'm trying to use something really terrible like IE5.5 or 6.
