Just seen your post Iain about your plan to convert your H van into a camper.I have been off the scene for a while but last year I restored my 1954 H Van and it it is now finished as a camper. If you visit my own website you can see the progress of the resto www.meandmyhvan.com I've been on a few trips to Anglesey in my van and am hoping to venture further afield this year. I guess you must live in the Liverpool area if you are doing the classic car restoration course, so not too far from me as I live near Mold in North Wales. If you want any tips or want to see my van then let me know at paul_walters@live.com Cheers Paul

Hi Paul, many thanks for getting in touch, I really appreciate you making the effort. I have previously had a look at your website and think I found it through a comment made on the citroenhyonline website. If I recall correctly you were doing some work on your van there and getting them to do the necessary welding etc. I had to move my van from Liverpool College during the summer holidays and Allan kindly allowed me to park up in his yard. Although I don't normally use Facebook I have just started a page there and shall try to bring it up to date over the next wee while! It seems to be a decent way of making contact with a few felloe enthusiasts.
We moved to West Kirby a year ago so pretty handy to you, in fact my wife Kate was working in Mold for a while. I'd love to see your van and gain any insight you have on the restoration and conversion process. As we bought an Edwardian house which requires renovation that does understandably take priority so the van progress is slow, although I am very much enjoying the HY project. The biggest problem I have apart from time constraints, is lack of a garage or even space to build one at thehouse. I'm sure a garage was pretty high up the list of requirements when we were looking to move house, and then the reality of Victorian/Edwardian housing layouts struck!
Anyway, take a note of my number and if you are popping along to the Marine lake for fish and chips or an ice cream let me know. Alternatively, and perhaps more likely, it would be nice to make a family outing to see Eric. Although the kids love HarrY and HenrY it must be tricky to imagine what I am trying to build when all they see is rust.
Thanks again Paul for getting in touch.
Kind regards.

Hi Dave, how are you dong? After a slow start to the year it's time I was thinking about mechanical stuff! Did you manage to get your defunked hard drive sorted yet? If so, I'll send you a memory stick, or if there are not many photos you could perhaps send them in a few emails? Although I've decided to follow your lead of using the 1.9TDI I am struggling to establish which model is most suited. I want to keep it as simple as possible, especially on the electronics side, but be sure that it would fit. What year was your donor Audi, and do you know the model code for the engine? It looks like the Passat is generally a bit cheaper with lower miles so would need to be sure of engine models in different ranges. Any clarification would be helpful.
What's the problem with your lack of heating?
Thanks.
Iain

Hi Iain,Great to hear from you and your plans to restore your two h vans.I am in the same boat as you about finding garage space for my van. It's too big to fit in my garage which is more suitable for a 2cv,so I had a bespoke breathable cover made for Eric and he is now wrapped up for the winter.I have made a few trips out during the past couple of weeks although I still need to underseal the van to protect it from the road salt.Sounds like a good idea to have a trip out to West Kirby,so I will be in touch in the near future.Cheers Paul

Hi Dave, more importantly, how are you doing? Sorry to hear about your health, I can only hope that it is nothing serious and that you are on the mend!
If it's easier simply email the photos to me on iain.speedie@headzone.com
Updated!!! I'm cheating as the posts so far are of quite old photos going back to when I got the vans, but I will drop in an update every now and then to bring it up to date.
Any info gratefully received.
Take care.
Kind regards.
Iain

Quick tweak to my heart in the next month or two should sort it. Staying calm and avoiding stress over the next few weeks is my biggest problem…. Ha ha Dave Bye the way, you doing the HY weekend on 8-10th May at Elton Farm Camp site. Forest of Dean. Hi Dave, would love to go to the h van weekend but the date clashes with the wife's birthday. I'll work on it as it could be either a weekend away in a posh hotel or an adventure in the van.Cheers Paul

Hello, I congratulate you on your work done HY, that's great!
I am French, I live near Avignon and I own a HY I plan to restore but also to improve by giving it vitamins! For the mechanics, the choice is not final yet. On mounting the disc brake has been achieved, the brake calipers seem to be those of the Audi. Can you point me to or from the brake discs front and rear and what were the changes in the wheel hubs? Details of the assembly would be helpful to me
Thank you for this valuable information for me. Good night
Best regards
