Only just seen this. An excellent purchase and I'm sure the buying experience was pleasurable too - Bill is a top bloke. Cheers, and yeah he is! Only today did I receive a free quarter-light in the post, to replace my broken one love it! gotta keep the Brands sticker!! It cost me £10, of course I'm keeping the Brands sticker! The car has now been fully machine polished, and it looks awesome - from a distance it could pass as a fresh from the paintshop car! The zero pence resto is going well, just turning our attention to some details now, such as a small repair on the rear end of the passenger side sill, and the bottom of the bonnet on the driver's side. Also will be touching up the paint in some areas, as well as painting the cream parts blue (front valance). As well as this, the wheels will be tidied up and resprayed in silver, as per original. The only money spent so far I believe is the carpets and under-felt I ordered today, which should be with me on the 11th; just in time for Goodwood! Shall be updating as and when changes are made

Time for an update! The past week has been hectic, particularly the weekend. The car has been subject to a fair bit of work, with the worst of the cosmetic rust being treated & painted. Also, the wheels have been painted, and carpet fitted. Why the big rush for this week? - So it was ready for the Goodwood revival of course! We left booking very late, so late in fact that all tickets had sold out...so we rang up the ticket office and they confirmed that the only way we could get tickets was if we were to purchase entrance to a new 'infield' car-park, which is basically a small car-park for pre-66 cars within the track. We went for this, the only problem being we didn't have a pre-66 car, which led us to buying this! Therefore, we felt the car should be looking half decent for the show. Anyway, the drive from the hotel was an hour (towed to the hotel), what could go wrong? Well, 20 mins short of Goodwood the car veered vigorously left, pulled up and had a look around, only to find that the rear passenger side suspension has been lowered Turns out the bush had failed and flew off, making for a very interesting drive indeed. We got there and back anyway, but only just it would appear, as now the car refuses to start, even with a new battery. The car has had a battery recharging issue since we bought it, I reckon it has something to do with the starter. Anyway, the car's back in the garage now to finish off the work needed. Enough words, a couple of pre-goodwood pics.

Nice 948. If you get stuck for any Herald specific qeustions stick your head onto the Club Triumph forum - you'll even find Bill on there, as well as the guy who owns the Herald website. It's nice and bloody annoying owning an early/low existence car. My 2000 is one of the oldest around and when I finally get around to sorting it out I'll end up with the constant modify or preserve argument in my head. Keep in mind that with your car, depending on ages etc., you may find the body panels unique. I've not looked at it but things like boot lids did change slightly so if you're really worried then do some research before drilling holes. I?f not, then enjoy and do as you wish. Also check if it's got a mk1 chassis under there before you even think about adding even half an extra horse power. It should have one, but things get changed other time. The mk1 chassis is incredibly weak. And don't sorry about tuck-under, it just adds to the excitement. Be careful on undulating b-roads until you get used to the back end though. After a while you'll get used to it and end up being slowed down by many a modern car.

A thought just occured to me. In 2007 and 2008 I went to a car show in Wroughton. I think on the 2008 I got there in convoy with Bill and Karen from their house. Karen was driving a Herald, Bill his Transit with a duff injector leaving a trail of black smoke seven miles long and me in the Acclaim. In was the slowest convoy I'd ever been in. I'm 99.9% certain the Herald was your new 948. In which case, this'll be your engine bay and car (second from the left) in the second picture. Other random information from those two snaps which might help form a picture of your cars past life. In the first picture you can see it next to a red Dolomite. This belongs to Bill (Goody on the CT website, not Mr Rarebits) who is an American who comes over each year to either do the Round Britain Reliability Run or the 10 Countries run in that car. That year Bill bought that Dolomite and was meeting Bill and Karen for the first time before they all did the RBRR in that Dolomite. In the second shot the first Herald is also a 948, but a couple owned by a man named Richard. Richard still owns and uses the car and you'll probably meet him if you ever go to a Triumph only event, he'll be one of the drunk ones - so in theory the two cars could meet again. And obviously the Acclaim of shame is mine.

Thanks for the info and pictures, although I'm not 100% sure if it's the same car; I think Bill said he had only had it three years, and that doesn't add up with 2008 Still, I could be wrong! Oh and yes it is a MK1 chassis, I've been told by quite a few people now that it's weak, but it looks to be in excellent shape and I have no plans for engine tuning anyway, 34.5bhp will have to do I will have to sign up the CT soon, I'm determined to do the 10CR next time it comes around, hopefully with something a little more capable though

I feel your pain mines off the road too ,waiting for a clutch kit, really love that colour ,car looks fantastic Thanks for the comment, certainly looks a lot nicer now that the front valance has been painted. & yeah it's never a good moment when something goes bang and the car retires back to the garage, but hey, it wouldn't be a classic Triumph if it was reliable! All part of owning a 50 year old car I guess

Keep up the good work, its looking better and better with every photo. I've got a 1200 herald and use it all the time what ever weather and has never let me down in the last three years(about time I serviced it really). One day I'll put it up on here along with my other cars. The other thing I like about these cars is the attention they always seem to draw and it seems that everyone has either had one, passed there driving test in one or there mum used to have one. I have never had any problems with the back end playing up but then you wont if you drive it accordingly. As I say keep up the good work and its nice to see that your not selling it or going over the top with it, well done.

Thanks for the kind words & yes I can agree with you there, every time I take it out I end up hearing stories from strangers about their old Herald, journies they've been on in them etc... No real updates to post at the moment, just been out in the car a fair amount (got some nice pictures to upload, which I'll do later on), but I can say that there is a big update coming up in the near future, along with a few smaller ones - so keep checking back!

Quick update! The Herald will be going in for some bodywork and paint soon, as well as getting the electrical issue sorted with the non-charging batteries, which I think is Dynamo related. Here's a few photos from a sunny weekend drive a while ago. It's been a while since I did any work on this, so over the weekend I decided to get on and do some little things.
First off was to replace the bulging and cracked old rad hoses with some new ones that have been sitting in the boot for some time now. I have 4, but when fitting it appears I have ne left over - my thoughts are that the kit is for the more popular 1200 & 12/50 models, which are most likely updated in some ways, as a few things on the 948 are very old school.
However, when running the car up to temperature I whacked the heater on (first time I've ever done this) - and when I next looked inside the car, the footwell was drenched...great. So tonight I'm going to go through the heater system, have a good clean and look around with that. Quite odd though, as the fluid level from the top of the radiator had not dropped at all, which makes me think the leak could be from outside? I have a few tips to try out from the guys off Club Triumph - so hopefully I'll find out what caused my leak.
I'm also looking to save up a few parts over the next couple of weeks, so when it comes back from paint I can give it a proper service and a thorough going-over at the same time. I doubt I'll be modifying much if I'm honest - very un-RR I know.
I'll try and keep this updated as I go.
Dan
