I sit here at the moment feeling distinctly frustrated at not being able to do any work on any of my projects or drive my cars despite being off work, this is due to me having my leg in plaster. If I'm going to be stuck inside I might as well look up some interesting stuff and try and start some good threads. Now ive always had a soft spot for classic cars that most other people overlook I'm not talking 80s and 90s stuff that is just starting to get a following here either, I mean stuff that is at least 30 years old if not 40 years that you just don't see and that the rest of the classic car fraternity seem to have forgotten. The sad thing is with these vehicles you rarely see good examples due to there values never having really appreciated. So lets have a few examples. Everybody loves and remembers the ADO 16 but when I had my Triumph 1300 at most shows nobody new what it was and certainly wouldn't have known it was FWD. My DAF is another example of a car that has notable historical significance that most of the world seems to have forgotten about. Another example in my opinion would be the Renault 5. When it come to 3 wheelers these little bonds don't seem to have anywhere near the following of the reliants. It appears I'm not very good at this so I'm going to let the rest of you have a go whilst I try and think of some more

Good thread idea, I'm very much a fan of "unloved" examples of cars. Unfortunately some of the older ones are very difficult to maintain as there is a huge lack of spares, a real shame that some of these are nearly extinct if not on the horizon.

My moskvich is truly a unloved classic, full of so may amazing features and fantastically thought out solutions to problems that the average man wouldn't even think of But alas it's often confused for having terrible build quality and very unreliable, when in fact I've had ZERO issues with it!! And it's built like a 60's Mercedes.

I agree on the mk1 Polo. I'll add the mk1 Derby, mk1 Passat, mk1 Scirocco, mk1 Jetta. All overshadowed by the ubiquitous mk1 Golf. Also, any Audi from the '70s, you just don't see them anywhere any more, even at classic car shows. I'm glad to say that I've owned almost all of the above with the exception of the mk1 Scirocco. I tend towards the underdogs

Hillman Avenger probably qualifies. Because it's not a ford or a vauxhall, and doesn't have the same kind of after market spares support

I went to a local show last month and of all the old mg's, jags and such even an old jowet, and probably the rarest car there was a Triumph Acclaim, haven't seen one in years.

Blimey, this is a good thread...
I think there are a myriad of reasons as to why some old cars are overlooked!
Firstly the reputation that a car had when new is a big part of things. BL products weren't praised for their reliability or dynamics when new (not all true!) and that stigma kind of stuck so they weren't looked after meaning they became scarce pretty quickly... Coupled with the bad reputation they had this made them completely overlooked.
Next I suppose is down to how well certain cars lasted. Some cars just seemed to dissolve in an instant and although some cars are still sought after today (Lancia's for example...) that kind of self destruction just put the idea of owning 'that' kind of car well out of their minds... That would be if they could find an example anyhow!!!
Next up is ubiquity... A common car is not desirable up until a point and it is usually when that point is reached that it is too late... The Renault 5 is a perfect example of this! They were very popular when new so I suppose people just got bored of them. Now they want then they're not there meaning that, in a roundabout way, they're overlooked as you just cannot get them...
I suppose there are many, many other reason why some classics become overlooked but those are the only ones I can think of... I suppose another reason why some classics are overlooked is because some get ALL the attention in their field! The Mk1 (and Mk2) Ford Escort is a good example of this along with any form of MGB... They are the 'go to' car of that kind of field which means some people might overlook all the others that they could try...
This is a very good thread indeed...

I think the £2000 scrappage scheme a few years ago sealed the fate of many a good car.

I'd include the non-turbo/EMS Saab 99: especially the early stainless steel bumper ones that have (I think) a slightly latin look to them:

If you go to any big car show you will see lots of traditional wood and chrome type triumphs, but hardly any TR7/8's. as well as the acclaim mentioned above.

I have turned up to a Triumph meet (mostly TRs and Stags) in my old Acclaim, lots of rolling eyes and tutting as I parked.
Its a shame, as IMO its actually the best CAR that Triumph ever made, and that's saying something. I hate to say it but its true, light years ahead of the Dolomite and that's coming from someone who loves dolomites!
And with Richard, the TR7 is the second best Triumph IMO, I preferred mine to the Sprint/1850 its just a pity the engine was shagged.....
