Long shot I know on a car based forum ! I have to build a pontoon/raft to carry around 6 tonne, so looking for someone with boat design experience to check my design/maths.....? Sorry if you've already seen this question on another forum. Thanks Andy

Used to work for a yacht design company (there for 10 1/2 years) - pm me to discuss in more detail what you want to know.

Other than you have to displace greater than 6 tonnes of water to float (some greek guy discovered this in his bath.... strange person....) I'm in the dark.
My guess would be though, that you need the centre of gravity nice and low, probably near the water line to make the thing as stable as possible. You'd also want it wide and flat bottomed for the same reason. The only issue I can see will be drag. I'd guess this is proportional to the frontal area, so a wide single hull will be a big drag, and the submerged surface area. Also a short wide craft may struggle to go straight so directional stability will dictate a long thin craft.
I'm not sure if this helps...
