Believe it or not, it's harder to create a perfectly flat panel like the ones in your photo and keep it straight during installation than one that has a complex shape.
Is that the car 'Geoff' from Top Gear?
Thanks mate!

Great build, great skills. It's nice to hear that slow and steady wins the race - too many rush jobs on TV!

Having just browses through 15 pages, I'm more than impressed.
More practice required to get my sheet metal skills up to par.

Initial stage of R2's rear facelift. A template is created so that features can be transposed to the other side. Fitting the door top perimeter and exterior skin to the jams. Door opens on a single pivot. Rear hatch's structure mated with the exterior skin and mounted on the newly created hinges. Hatch opens for the first time. Work can now start to separate, prime, join and finalize the hatch's fit. R2's revised rear fascia mocked up. Next step will be to cut the tacks to separate the panels and create the panel's final details.

Nothing nasty meant by this but is it supposed to look like a bigger Lotus Evora?
I know it's hard for other designs not to influence your design subconsciously and it can be hard to take the time when designing to take a step back and look at a project as a whole rather than individual parts.
You are a craftsman and very skilled at what you do.

Hi Pete, You're right! It's always a challenge to create something with a fresh new look. The design of this project was actually influenced by it's predecessor, Rhythm, which was themed after 60's sports cars and borrowed styling cues from the SR71-Blackbird recon plane, including the side concavities, twin turbos and sequential signals on the rear deck(representing the SR-71's red stripes). We finished Rhythm about 10 years ago. After it was done... with all the free time on my hands... I got bored. So, I started working on a few sketches of 'the next one'. With R2, I basically tightened up all the features seen on the original resulting in a smoother design that was 28" shorter. Fabrication started in 2010 and over the course of the build some design aspects have evolved. We build the car and not the drawing. So if a better idea comes along the way we'll run with it. Not sure if you've seen these, but here are a few photos of Rhythm. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Cheers!

Nick
I had not seen those images thank you for posting them.
I see the influences with the SR71 also Mustang, Aston Martin and Jaguar XJ13/XJS a very nice vehicle indeed a very purposeful design.

You have a very sharp eye! Since we don't have a means to create glass we needed to borrow a windscreen from a TR7 and re-shape the perimeter to make it suit our application. The side glass is original as tempered glass can't be adjusted. I get a lot of people comparing the vehicle to Mustangs, Camaros, Aston Martins and Jags.
Btw... I love your banner photo. Pretty trick!
