So, what’s been happening with this then? Following my extensive search for DOT4 brake fluid, I finally found somewhere that sold litre bottles that Frankenhealey hadn’t snaffled for the Goddess, and had the requisite amount delivered. This meant I could now do a proper bleed of the brakes. Briefing the remaining Bottle Opener in her task, and armed with suitable tubing, we set to. When you bleed a ‘38’s brakes, you first do a nipple on the modulator then all four wheels, starting at the front, as you would with any other car. Then you pressurise the system by turning on the ignition and start again, this time two more nipples on the modulator then the rears first (as they are operated by the high pressure side), finally doing the fronts again. It was when we got to the latter stage that a rather large puddle was forming underneath. Hmm, that’ll be brake fluid then. Having a good hunt around, there was no leakage from any of the unions (pity) and it appeared to be coming from the boy of the pump itself. Gollocks! The only part of the braking system I’d not been near to date. Pump out but no obvious point of leak, no crack in the housing, just general wetness. So I split the pump body off the top of the motor. The o-ring had obviously seen better days so we set about obtaining a new one. Kuya John stuck me on the back of his motorbike and we death-raced our way to Binondo or, as someone put it, the “O-ring Quarter of Manila, where it would seem every establishment sells them. There, a little man supplied a replacement. 50mm I/d and 3mm cross section. Wrong, it still leaked and, upon enquiring on another forum, I was told I needed 2mm. “I’ll go and get one later.” Said Kuya John. Now, we’ve had this ‘soon’, ‘later’ and how they relate to real time discussion before and, in this case, ‘later’ meant seven days! So now I have my 2mm ring and, when I finish this, I’ll go and fit it. If it still leaks I’ll a) get drunk and b) have to split the bottom pump housing off the motor and replace the shaft seal, something I really, really don’t want to do. At least I think I’ve found that the seal’s not a Wabco brake specific part and that I should be able to source one locally, but it looks a bit of a pig of a job. More later. And I don’t mean seven days!

It's the shaft seal. Well,it would be, wouldn't it?
The good-ish news is that I got the old one out without having to strip things down any further. Looks like someone has been in there before and used sealant on the outer. My understanding from the net is that it shouldn't be necessary. Am I correct?
The really good news will be if SKF have a replacement!

We are now a leak free zone! 😊
The place I got the rings from had the shaft seal as well. A quid well spent.
Old one popped out easily (despite my fears) and the new pushed in nicely. All back together and pressured up. No leak!
Just need to bleed the HP side tomorrow.
For anyone finding themselves in the same position, the seal is described thus: 16x8x6, SC/SF, NBR, SOG.

(Our series 3 is in bits - hopefully get the bets from Paddocks ordered up tonight) To be fair, reliability has never really been a problem. Apart from a flat battery and the recent cam sensor issue, she's never let me down. This time, it's just been waiting for parts. without that, three days would have seen the brake overhaul done but several weeks of waiting for replacements for wrong bits, then the ABS pump springing a leak, with attendant 7 day "later" period, has meant that the brake sagas has put her off the road for the longest period in my ownership. This morning I'll bleed the HP side again and that should be that. Ownership is made all worthwhile when last night I was running her up to temperature and getting some wind back in the suspension, the Bottle Opener jumped into the back seat and told me that when she grows up, she wants one too!

Happy with that. Found a slight weep on the HP hose from the pump this morning, nipped it up and that's okay.
Bled the modulator and got the last of the air out. Then de-pressurised the system again, started up and the light went out in around 3-4 seconds, just as it should. Blinked back on for the first two jabs of the pedal but on a fairly long test drive stayed obstinately out. 😊 So she's holding system pressure now and not relying on the pump every time.
God, it was nice not to be in that bloody Toyota!

George I take it that you hate the Toyota has much has I hated this one Although having it from new and it being a fully speced HiLux never have I driven something that I hated has much as this - it has be the most over rated thing ever - reliable yes but the most uncomfortable vehicle I have ever driven (had 3 other 4x4 trucks prior to this) - with the driving position off set and all based upon a 30 year + old design - just jazzed up with a few bolt on trinkets - driving 50,000 miles per annum in this was not at all fun - I could do 50 miles in it and crawl out of it like I was crippled when I came to a stop - very, very happy the day I handed the keys back in for this one !

Abso-bloody-lutely! The Fortuner is just an estate version, built down to the lowest possible price and still 100% too dear. Brakes either on or off, turbo lag measured in days and yes, those seats. I suppose if you're selling a vehicle into a country where everyone sits on the floor, it's luxury. For a normal person, it's torture! 50k a year? That's suicide territory. 😊

It certainly was - which is one the primary reasons for giving up the well respected / well paid salaried job 2 years ago and returning to my original (apprenticed) career with no regrets since - I now work from home and probably do maybe 3,000 / 4,000 miles a year

Went out for an extended test drive early this morning. To say I enjoyed it would be somewhat of an understatement. Instant acceleration, braking at the rate I want, floating over all those bumps and lumps that the Toyota has to be nursed across, soft rumble of the V8. Oh, and comfortable seat too! I grinned the entire time! I know we've discussed the P38 reliability issues before, so here's the list of things I've done since I got her some three, maybe 4 years and 7,000kms ago. Oil/filter Air filter Pollen filter Fan Belt Plugs HT leads OEM Exhaust (Middle/Rear) Tyres 165/70/16 Wheels (16x8") Oil/filter Pollen filter Brake pads F/R Stainless Exhaust (Front/Cats) Air Suspension EAS Compressor Fuse Box Air filter Rear Prop UJs Oil/filter Oil/filter A/C condenser/dryer Driver's door latch Front propshaft Radiator/thermostat/hoses ARB Drop Links ARB bushes Air filter Panhard rod bushes Oil/filter Belt tensioner ABS Modulator overhaul Stainless brake hoses ABS pump overhaul Air filter Apart from the EAS, there's nothing really there that you wouldn't do to any other 20 year old vehicle with zero service history, so not too bad I don't think. Granted, we get kinder weather than most, so corrosion isn't an issue, but even so. Obviously there are things not on the list, a couple of new batteries - an occupational hazard in these temperatures, checking gear/transfer box and diff fluids (all bang on the mark and looking remarkably fresh), clearing all the stored faults from the ECU, but nothing serious that's ever stopped me jumping in and driving away. You'll note a lot of filter and oil changes as well for such a small mileage. I've always felt that in Manila, you shouldn't have an odometer. Vehicle use should be measured in hours, like a forklift or a stationary engine (which is what you mainly resemble ), as the 7,000km bears no relation to the time that you've actually been running. So while you're cruising along at a heady 3-4kph for three hours, you’re not actually going anywhere, but you are still sucking filthy air and working the oils hard. So yes, I've still got a good stock of filters downstairs! Next up? Bumpers to replace the current cracked ones. I’m looking to have them made here in steel or ally to follow the existing profile as much as possible. I’ve not seen aftermarket units I like and besides, shipping and duty would be a killer. Then it’s onto the interior and all those brittle plastics that are slowly giving up. The driver’s seat base needs some TLC as well and I’ve found a trimmer whose work is spot on, so I’ll get him to rebuild and re-cover mine for me. The other seats are just nicely worn. I’ve still got to decide what to do with the dashboard as well. It’s goosed and it’s never struck me as a masterpiece from new, so toying with ideas for a whole new look. The only thing that really p1sses me is the bonnet. It was immaculate until we had our three week temporary stay in Tondo and it now looks like someone’s been ice-skating on the damn thing. I’ve tried polish, but no-go, so I’m going to get the detailing shop up the road to try with machine but I can’t help but think a blow over (or paint wash, as they call it) will be the solution. Oh, and I still want to have a go and lace the roof, as its sun damaged. I’m just not sure whether to do it black (on top of the green) or a dark silver.

I think that your p38 has been very lucky to find you ! I have a sneaky suspicion that a lot of the 'issues' with p38 reliability have been caused by owners lower down the chain being too tight to pay for what is needed and garages not having a clue how to simply fix them. Happy you are having a bit of joy after a rough ride recently. James

Morning George,
Regarding the bumpers, are there no units off a different vehicle. Shogun, Nissan etc that you could bolt on, or even modify minimally?
My truck came with a read bumper, step and towbar that was not a Chevy part or of any identifiable origin, and I so desperately wanted to replace it with the same (that had not been bent and damaged) but could not find or identify anything close, so of course I bought a later model rear bumper that I will be fitting..... one day.

Saying that, you only need to read some forums where big money and ignorance have combined to still not fix the problem! Smiler on here is a good example of how it should be done. Could I be accused of grooming young girls? Well, I suppose I could. Now just a minute, before you start jumping to conclusions and reaching to call the Philippine Child Helpline (should there even be such a thing), let me explain. Having convinced my Little Bleeder that Range Rover= Good and Toyota= Evil, we were met by a group of Tania's classmates this morning outside school. Seems Tania had sent a Facebook message to say that today, we would not be skulking to school in the Hateful Fortuner and windows raised to hide behind the 100% tint, but would be pulling up loud and proud with full fanfare, like a docking Atlantic Liner of yore, in the reinvigorated '38. Apparently this caused enough interest for three of her mates (one of which - whose father handily owns a bar up Makati way - admits to being a "car nut". Wonder if she can marry at 14? ) to be on hand for our arrival. Seems they approved of Her Majesty's conveyance. So that's three more converts to the cause then. A successful morning I think! There should be some pictures (of the RR, not schoolgirls), but they came out upside down!
